About the Author
Sandra A. Jacobson, M.D., is a Senior Scientist at Banner Sun Health Research Institute in Sun City, Arizona. In the past, she worked in Consultation/Liaison Psychiatry and Inpatient and Outpatient Psychiatry at Tufts Medical School and New England Medical Center in Boston, as Director of the EEG Laboratory at Shattuck Hospital in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, and in Consultation/Liaison Psychiatry at Brown Medical School and The Miriam Hospital in Providence, RI. She is board certified by the ABPN in Psychiatry, with Added Qualifications in Geriatric Psychiatry, Psychosomatic Medicine, and (formerly) Clinical Neurophysiology (EEG and EMG).

A good book let down by poor attention to detail

First the bad. Others have noted some of the more specific mistakes this book makes, but there is a constant problem with where decimal points are placed, and especially with how gun calibres are stated. For example, in talking about the proposal to arm the Jagdpanther with a 128mm gun, the imperial measurement is given as a .5", rather than 5" gun. When reviewing the Italian light CV 33, it says, (and I quote) "a water-cooled 0.2 inch (6.5mm) machine gun that proved so catastrophic that it was soon replaced by a 3.5 inch (88mm) Fiat 18.35 twin machine gun".

Putting a twin 88mm machine gun on a CV would take some seriously impressive engineering!

But it keeps going on, a 3 inch gun could actually be referring to a 75mm, 76mm, 76.2mm or even a 77mm. In fact the reference to the Sherman calls both the original 75mm and the upgunned 76mm versions 3in guns in the same paragraph!

In a book about weapons this can only be called sloppy and is a stain on what would otherwise be a very impressive work.

Now the odd: I do not know the author, but this as credit is given to translators I'm assuming this was originally a German work. I say that as because while I have heard of certain German vehicles such as the RSO tractor referred to as 'crawlers', this is the first time I've ever heard either the US M4 High Speed Tractor or the M29 Weasel referred to this way. I want to make it clear that the translators have done an excellent job, but seeing this is just a little strange to English readers.

While the book does an excellent job of choosing which weapons to review, I confess that one omission confounded me. After reviewing the 8cm or 81mm mortars of most armies, the author then goes on to do the same of the Soviet army. I would have though that if only one mortar was going to be included, it would be the Soviet 12cm mortar.

Now, the good: In about 300 pages devoted to weapons, with most pages having 2 weapons, probably somewhere in excess of 500 of the most important weapons of WW2 are covered in a handy, well printed, and astonishingly inexpensive book.

Now, lets be clear: are you looking for an in depth analytical review of the development, testing, battlefield impact and upgrades of anything from the Lee-Enfield .303 to the Panther tank? This book isn't for you! You need to go and get the specialist books that abound on such subjects.

This provides a few paragraphs on the development, use and impact of anything from handguns (usually one per major army of the war) to aircraft carriers. Most weapons get half a page, a few selected weapons (such as the Sherman tank) get a two page spread.

This is an introduction and nothing more. Its value lies in the fact that so many weapons (especially armoured vehicles and aircraft) are side by side and you can see the wartime development of these weapons in a single volume.

For the cost and number of weapons systems reviewed, this should be a 4 star book (the only 5 star book I know of in this field is Chris Bishops Directory of WW2 Weapons, now long out of print I think, and while it is far larger, even it managed to lose the chapter on Allied Destroyers!). Its inability to get weapons calibres right (a rather important consideration when talking about weapons, I'd have thought) reduces it to 3 stars.

Well Done Review of World War II Weapons

Rarely will you find so many different weapon systems covered in one book. The author is German so the text appears to have been translated into English leading to sloppy prose at times, but the wide coverage, excellent illustrations and a decent level of technical and historical detail makes up for it. The typical weapons book includes weapons from Japan, the US, Germany, Great Britain and the USSR, but this book also includes systems from France, Poland, Switzerland, Italy and others. Tons of interesting content at a very reasonable price makes this a nice addition to your WWII library.

This is a very excellent book. It covers weapons from small arms to aircraft carriers. The detail and illustrations are good. Since entire books have been written about many of these weapons, this book does not have all of the possible detail, but the level of detail is better than we should have a right to expect for a book with such a wide scope. Furthermore, it is very inexpensive. Highly recommended.

Left Overs of Soviet Propaganda

After reading the review from Caveat Emptor I decided to see for myself if this is true. I started to read this book hoping to take a few skills with me as I plan my return to college. I remembered this book back when I was in high school being recommend by my teachers. The authors labeled everything with an -ology and -pedia like hypnosopedia -hypnosis an sleep. There were so many words you had to take notes. Story after story after story of how great this system is and only one chapter (7) that "showed" anything related to learning. I needed a score card to keep track of all the people. The key is to relax and use rhytum with yoga techniques to better absorb the facts. I walk away with unverifyible stories and wild claims. Its Great! Its Amazing! WHAT IS!?!? What do I need to do exactly to learn a language in 2 weeks FLUENTLY?? OK, they wrote this in 1979 so I went to their website ...and got more of the same. If you must read this book read chapter 7 and toss the rest. The rest of the book went into ESP, dreams telpathy etc. I recommend "Mastering the Information Age : A Course in Working Smarter, Thinking Better, and Learning Faster" by Michael J. McCarthy. It teaches you everything grokking, speed reading, meditation, communication without fluff, nutrition etc. It's out of print but a library should have it. A PBS "Nova" episode featured James Randi (randi.org) who went to Russia to investigate claims of "Charged water" and paranormal stuff funded by the government there. Each one he proved a fraud or a scam. I think this is tre in this case. I did try some of the shorter exercise in ch 7 with so-so success (really a little worst since I study with no distractions TV etc. What convinced me that this maybe snake oil was on page 23 when Dr. Georgi Lozanov did a sleep learning experiment and pull the speaker plugs on some of the students' material as they slept. The results: high scores. They anticipated the benefits they would receive and did very well. That's how good the system is. But they must have had the knowledge already to pass. Also Dr. Lozanov was too busy to use his own course!!!(Pg 37) They plug this as a positive because the system was so popular he had to give appearances. They would have fitted in well as Art Bell's guest!! I believe there is no limits to human potential. That's why I read the book. I just don't believe they have the right method and KNOW IT. SAVE YOUR MONEY!!!!

SUPERLEARNING, HARD COVER BOOK AND METHOD

I have utilized this books methods since 1980. I am currently a retired USA Counterintelligence Special Agent, USA Infantry Platoon Sergeant and Vietnam Combat Veteran of four tours.

I utilized this method in training my soldiers in our common military and infantry tasks in the 1980's. The Army average score on the tests was 60. I and my soldiers never scored below 88. I had six of the soldiers, including myself, max the entire test.

I utilized the method at the USA Intelligence School, FT Huachuca, AZ. My class had the highest class average in the history of the school at 93.85% My average for the course was 98.43%.

When utilized properly this method is the finest education and training method in existance today.

It REQUIRES stress free learning conditions. You cannot do this in a "Drill Sergeant" type instruction environment. The student retains over 90% of the material presented/studied using the method.

When the soldiers had to utilize tasks in a high intensity and combat situation they performed flawlessly.

Inspired Dizzy Nonsense

I first read superlearning in 1984 and have had a look at this recent publication. As a teenager, it did inspire me to wonder about my own mind's potential. It also gave me some good excuses not to study so much, and some great excuses for why I didn't do so well in exams etc.

The one thing I kind of like about it, is that it talks about many different tricks. It is an exploration of methods, and really doesn't give enough away about any particular method. I have read other similar books that give detailed steps that seem tailored to leading you off an examination cliff.

The way it is written is unbelievable, and since maturing and learning about real learning strategies, I realize this book is mostly harmless.

If you want something more workable, go for Kenneth Higbee instead.

This cleanse will truly JUMP START your life!!!

I first read Kathy's book, Quantum Wellness, and was very moved by all that Kathy has to say and how kindly and non-judgementally she expresses herself and the ideas in her book. She urges people to live a more happy and healthy life, through living, thinking, and eating consciously. It wasn't until this book came into my life, that I really decided to do the 21 Day Cleanse. I have never done anything better for myself and I thank Kathy so much for this.

The "cleanse" is not really a cleanse in the way that celebrities and news people are talking about today. I view it more as a meal plan, which takes the stigma out of cleansing or dieting, as it really is what her cleanse is about. Once I got over the initial, "What on earth will I do without caffeine, animal products, and sugar?!" I went to the grocery store and stocked up on everything that Kathy suggests. There was SO much that I could eat, and I didn't even get everything the first-go round. (I highly recommend having all of the foods on hand so that you don't want to fall back to old habits....this makes doing the cleanse super easy!)

I have never slept better in my life, and wake up with so much energy and ready to take on the world. No caffeine necessary. (after the first few days or so....) My skin looks so much better (I keep getting so many compliments on how I am glowing) and I feel amazing. Not to mention the fact that I have already lost 4 pounds and all of my clothes fit better. I look and feel great; mind, body, and spirit.

If you want to change your life for the better (or just lose weight, or just feel good!), I HIGHLY recommend this book and this cleanse. And if you can't do 21 days, do 7 days or whatever you can, as Kathy recommends. Trust me, it's the best thing you'll ever do.

Quantum shift in food focus was an excellent kickstart

Heard about this book on the TV morning news, but I'm not an Oprah fan so I did not rely on her promotion of the book. The phrase "Quantum cleanse" grabbed me -- I needed a kick in the pants lifestyle change; I'm not one for slow gradual programs. So I just did a cold turkey start two weeks ago -- no alcohol, no caffeine, no glutens, no sugar, no animal products. I'm in my final week. Sleeping better, more energy all day long (no 4-5pm tiredness) and lost 6lbs in the first 10 days. Note -- I did not read much if any on the spiritual/mind/meditation aspects of the book. Not for me. I just went straight to the food focus and (limited) recipes. Had a three-day headache from dropping caffeine, then no problems. The "no gluten" rule is the hardest one to work into the program because it is in too many things I like. Try quinoa -- excellent food and super nutritious. I'm not into self-help books and I was not sure how a former Ford model would be an expert in such things, but hey -- I commend her as it worked for me. If only for the food part of the book -- I am recommending it to my friends and colleagues. I'm sure a ton of other health/diet books have the same "drop it" rules, but this is the one book that actually got me doing it, so kudo 5 stars for the food rules (but only 3 stars for the other spiritual stuff).

Very do-able cleanse

This book takes a common sense approach to healthy cruelty-free eating. It also addresses a lot of the weak points in the diets of many Americans such as alcohol,caffeine, sugar, meat and dairy etc. If you can give up these things for 21 days you may just be able to give them up forever. The menus at the end are very sensible and do not include any extremes in calorie restrictions. The only thing that didn't "click" with me were the meditation exercises but you can substitute your own way of meditating. I would recommend this book to people new to cleanses or to someone considering going vegan.
