ANOTHER SUPERB BIOGRAPHY BY RAY MONK OF A MAJOR PHILOSOPHER

Ray Monk is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Southampton, and the author of the definitive biography of Ludwig Wittgenstein, Ludwig Wittgenstein: The Duty of Genius. In this book (there is also a second volume, BERTRAND RUSSELL: 1921-70 THE GHOST OF MADNESS VOL 2), he deals with Russell's life with a philosphical command that other biographers (e.g., Ronald Clark's very good The Life of Bertrand Russell) do not possess.

Monk begins by stating, "There are many things for which I admire Russell greatly - his enormous intelligence, his commitment to philosophical clarity and rigour, his dedication to the causes of social justice and international peace, and so on. But the challenge to those of us who admire Russell is to understand how they can coexist with a sometimes quite chilling coldness to those close to him, and a disturbing capacity for deep and dark hatreds."

Monk's observations on Russell are very deep and pertinent: e.g., "Russell was fond---perhaps over-fond---of presenting his life as a series of epiphanies, many of which, one suspects, were overplayed by him in later life for the sake of lending drama to the facts of his life."

Concerning Russell's early work in mathematical logic, Monk asks, "Would Russell have produced such important original work in logic and philosophy if he had NOT been dead to the world of the senses?" He adds, "Russell's work on mathematics had, in an indirect way, provided an alternative to religious faith."

Monk chronicles in some detail Russell's attitudes toward religion, which---particularly during the time of his relationship with Lady Ottoline Morrell---were once quite positive, and rather fervent. Russell wrote her, "I shall always be hungry for your God and blaspheming him. I could pour forth a flood of worship - the longing for religion is at times almost unbearably strong." "Indeed passion is of God, the unquenchable thirst for heaven - it is the power that drives us on to seek out good. We are all exiles in this nether world, and all passion has something of homesickness."

Monk is at his best when describing Russell's relationship with Wittgenstein, and gives many insightful comments, such as: "Russell was still inclined to look upon Wittgenstein's work as a kind of 'fine tuning' of his own.... And Wittgenstein was not repairing it, as Russell continued to think, but he was demolishing it altogether." Russell's "relationship with Wittgenstein suffered from the very beginning from his insistence on casting Wittgenstein in a role for which he was unsuited.... From this standpoint, Wittgenstein would always remain unintelligible, and it is scarcely any wonder that he felt misunderstood by Russell." "The importance that Russell attached to understanding Wittgenstein's work at this time, and his refusal to take Wittgenstein's brusque dismissal of his own work were, I believe, connected with his desire to preserve his intellectual integrity. Who better than Wittgenstein---for whom the compromises of journalistic writing were unthinkable---to act as his philosophical conscience?"

This is another exceptional biography by Monk, and will be essential reading for anyone interested Russell, Wittgenstein, modern philosophy, or one of the influential figures of the 20th century.

Q. What do you enjoy most about writing for kids versus writing for adults?

A. The best part about writing for kids is the piles of letters I get. Grown-ups might stop you in an airport and tell you they like the novels, but kids will sit down and write a three-page letter, complete with illustrations. They're sharp and perceptive, and they really love the irreverent point of view in the books.

Q. Chomp pokes fun at a survivalist reality TV show--what do you think about America’s obsession with “reality” TV?

A. Reality television taps into the same human impulse that makes you slow down on the highway to gawk at a six-car pile-up. Everybody does it and nobody wants to admit it. Beside Jon Stewart, the best comedy on television is Finding Bigfoot and some of these other reality shows. Infested! is another good one, particular the bedbug episode. �

Q. As a native Floridian, what is the most exotic animal you’ve encountered?

A. Poisonous snakes, gators, crocs, iguanas, black widow spiders, all that stuff. I tried to raise a couple of wild raccoons, which I would not recommend. I also used to breed rat snakes, which are beautiful animals. Even though Chomp takes place in the Everglades, I wouldn't call it a scary place--not nearly as scary as the lobby of the Orlando airport on a day when the Disney tours arrive.

Q. In Chomp, both Mickey and Wahoo are fearless when it comes to snakes and other wild beasts (and nutty people, for that matter)--do you have any animal phobias?

A. Yeah, I'm not crazy about chihuahuas. My Labrador and I will go two or three blocks out of our way to avoid one. For some reason they always want to chew my ankles off.

Q. You named the two kids in Chomp after fish--Wahoo and Tuna--how did that come about?

A. I just thought it would be cool to name a boy after Wahoo McDaniel, who played for the Dolphins when I was a kid. I'm not sure whether he was named after the fish, or after the wild noises he made when he was a pro wrestler. As for Tuna, it's just a fun name that looks good on the page. "Big Tuna" is what they used to call Bill Parcells, the former Giants coach. He looks nothing like a tuna, by the way.

Q. Did you know when you started writing that you would include a character who is being abused by a parent?

A. My novels don't have wizards and dragon-hunters, just ordinary kids in the ordinary world. And the reality, sadly, is that some kids go home every night wondering if their mother or father is going to hurt them. That's Tuna's world, and I didn't have any qualms about portraying it that way. In Scat I had a character whose dad comes back very badly injured from Iraq. Again, that's real life for thousands and thousands of families in this country.

Q. Can we assume you are going to keep writing for kids (we hope)?

A. Hoot was going to be my one and only novel for kids, but now I'm sort of hooked on writing them. Young readers are just the coolest audience, and I feel so lucky that my novels have been so well-received. I don't see myself quitting. It's too much fun.

Q. You clearly have the single word title thing going for your kids’ books, is that just something you started with and stuck to, or is there more to the story?

A. The novels for young readers have one-word titles because I want to distinguish them from the grown-up novels, which all have two-word titles like Skinny Dip and Strip Tease. It was a conscious decision. I have a son in middle school (and also grandchildren), and none of them are ready to read the Big Person novels yet. The one-word title lets the booksellers (and the parents) know that those are the kid-safe books.

Q. What has been your most memorable moment as an author?

A. I was at a book-signing in Boulder, Colorado, when a very nice woman told me she'd named her cancerous tumor after a character in one of my novels. It was quite astonishing. I was flattered (who wouldn't be?) but also a bit rattled. The happy ending was that her surgery had been successful and she was totally recovered.

Gr 6-9-Carl Hiaasen takes on reality TV in his latest novel (Knopf, 2012). Wahoo Cray is the assistant to his wild animal wrangler father. Their property holds everything from alligators to Bobcats that appear in TV shows and films. However, after Wahoo's father suffers a serious injury, debts pile up and his mother takes a temporary job in China. It also forces Wahoo and his father to accept a lucrative but questionable gig with the reality show, "Expedition Survival." James Van Der Beek's narration captures the cast of colorful characters in this fast-paced, humorous story. His vocal depiction of Wahoo is spot on, and he easily changes gears to play a variety of adults, including Wahoo's gruff but caring father. Derek Badger, the host of the reality show, is expertly drawn as a bumbling buffoon who has managed to convince viewers he is a survivalist. Van Der Beek is at his best with Badger's character, making a fake Aussie accent sound almost, but not quite authentic. As the story moves from being about filming a TV show to an action tale complete with boat chases and a gun-toting baddie, the narrator keeps it all in check, easily changing voices, while also acting as an excellent tour guide of the Florida Everglades thanks to Hiassen's lyrically descriptive text. Hiaasen's "Chomp" is an entertaining romp through the Everglades

Novelist and Miami Herald columnist Carl Hiaasen is known for his love of his home state of Florida, and his relentless championing of environmental issues for the benefit of the wildlife and natural habitats of the state. Many of his novels for adults have plots revolving around environmental concerns, and the storylines of his juvenile novels, of which "Chomp" is the fourth, are all centered on issues relating to man's interaction with the environment.

In the tradition of his adult novels, "Chomp", like Hiaasen's three previous juvenile novels -- "Hoot", "Flush", and "Scat" -- is inhabited by a cast of characters who are well drawn for their roles. Hiaasen's characters are often pretty wacky, and though dialed back from the craziness found in his adult novels, there is an entertaining level of zaniness in "Chomp" which kids in the target audience will enjoy immensely while they learn about the environmental issues underlying the story. There are greedy, somewhat dim, bad (or at best, bad-ish) guys who exploit the environment for their own gain, and good guys who, sometimes reluctantly, find themselves going to bat for the environment.

The juvenile protagonists in the story, a (presumably middle-school age) boy with the unlikely name of Wahoo Cray and his school friend, a girl with the equally unlikely name of Tuna Gordon, are sharp, smart, resourceful kids with whom juvenile readers will identify. With his mom away in China teaching Mandarin to American businessmen, Wahoo is helping his father, animal wrangler Mickey Cray, with a job that will bring in enough money to get their home's mortgage out of hock -- hiring out their tame animals to a faked-up "survivalist" adventure TV show starring a greedy, pampered television star named Derek Badger (a one-time Irish tap dancer � la "Riverdance"; real name -- Lee Bluepenny) whose only real talent is the ability, and willingness, to eat just about anything that won't actively kill him.

When Derek's TV show, "Expedition Survival", comes to the Florida Everglades to fake yet another episode with the star supposedly surviving on his (slim) wits and (non-existent) nature skills in a howling wilderness, Mickey is hired to provide tame animals to stand in as the wild creatures Derek supposedly encounters in the 'Glades (actually the pond at the Cray's animal park). The trouble starts when the witless star decides to notch up the realism and film the episode in the middle of the actual Everglades, with real wild animals. Tuna invites herself along on the trip with Mickey & Wahoo sporting a black eye received at the hands of her drunken, maladjusted father, hoping to get away for a day or two while he cools down (and sobers up). Things start to get a little crazy a couple of days into the shoot when Derek disappears from their Everglades camp site, in the middle of a thunderstorm, after a couple of less-than-satisfactory encounters with actual wild animals wrangled for the show by Mickey -- and the trouble ramps up when Tuna's gun-toting father comes to the Everglades looking to bring her home.

As kids in Hiaasen's stories often do, Wahoo & Tuna use their wits, and courage, to handle both family problems and larger, outside issues having to do with threats to the natural environment in a manner that young readers will find entertaining, educational, and empowering. With critters galore, both tame and wild, thunderstorms, trackless swamps, airboat chases in the 'Glades, and a cast of likable and dis-likable (as they deserve) characters, "Chomp" is another hit from Carl Hiaasen that is sure to delight kids and adults alike.

Funny and Entertaining- but also sort of strange

Chomp is a funny book. It is also a little bit crazy and even zany at times. While I love reading books geared for younger audiences, I had trouble not rolling my eyes a few times with this one. It wasn't so much the crazy incidents that occurred, like Wahoo's father being hit of the head by a frozen iguana, or the naming his son "Wahoo", or the fake survivalist reality star that stumbles into trouble at every turn. I was happy to laugh at that stuff and chalk it up to good clean fun, and it was. What I had trouble with though, was some of the character interactions.

Wahoo and his father decide to help out with a TV series so that they can get caught up on financial troubles that started after a frozen iguana literally knocked the father out of work for a while. His Mother flew to Asia to earn some money tutoring, so Wahoo and his father work the TV show together. As they are packing up to leave for the wilderness, they run into a classmate named Tuna who is being abused by her drunken father. This was the part that bothered me. Wahoo doesn't know Tuna very well, but instead of getting her real help, they take her along with them on their trip. It felt so sudden and random. Naturally Wahoo and Tuna become good friends along the trip and are trying to figure out what to do with her father upon their return. Tuna's absolutely crazy father ends up chasing them into the wilderness all drunk and shooting at people. I also didn't like that after Wahoo's father is shot in the foot, he tells his son to lie to the mother and tell her one of their animals got to it. I know it sounds like I am being harsh, I just think we have to be careful with serious topics such as abuse and promote honesty. I loved the crazy reality star that gets lost and thinks he is turning into a vampire. He has absolutely NO business being in the wilderness alone and the story was funny enough and action-packed without Tuna's abusive gun-wielding father. Overall, the story was entertaining and I think that younger readers will laugh and enjoy themselves.

When is a thesaurus more than a thesaurus? When it is Bartlett's Roget's Thesaurus. As well as providing synonyms like a standard thesaurus, this work has the added value of the creative combination of both Bartlett's and Roget's traditions plus some features of an almanac. Roget devised a conceptual (as opposed to alphabetical) thesaurus. The imagery of Bartlett's quotations adds breadth and depth to some categories here, and the 100 almanaclike lists of facts, interspersed in the body, supplement the synonyms. The introductory portion of the book includes an explanation of and rationale for this unique approach to thesaurus preparation. It is a North American work with emphasis on contemporary idiom and usage. There are two category lists, one grouped by concept and the other alphabetical, plus a directory of sidebar lists and a list of abbreviations on the contents page.

For each category in the thesaurus, there are selections of synonyms for each appropriate part of speech. The general arrangement of the thesaurus can be visualized from the following example. The concept of Spatial Relations has 61 categories including space, location, cities, rivers, absence, expansion, etc. Category 569 Mountains and Hills starts with a quote by John Ruskin. It has nouns, adjectives, and verbs that describe things hilly or mountainous. There are cross-references to such related categories as Geology and Height. There is also a list of Notable Mountains, Mountain Ranges and Hills. The lists are a form of ready reference. The one associated with category 299 Love is of Famous Lovers of Fact and Fiction. In the lengthy and very detailed index, each word, phrase, foreign expression, and idiom in the thesaurus is found with an associated number for category and/or keyword and paragraph.

This is a great book (great 445.14)--great in contents (plentiful 97.4), great in size (heavy 538.9), great value for the money (important 799.7), and great fun to use (wonderful! 294.20). Highly recommended to all libraries and wordsmiths.

Functional, Intuitive, Powerful Reference Tool

For me as a student, translator, and writer, this thesaurus has become one of my best friends. It is organized in a very creative way, with an index in the back referring to the various sections of the book's body, where terms are grouped by topic. In the index, you look up the word for which you need related words, and then you choose between the many terms under that heading, each with a distinct variation in meaning. You can thereby turn to the section that best relates to the meaning you are looking for.

Once you've turned to the section referred to in the index, you not only find an extensive list of synonyms for that term, but you also have, on that same page, words that are related but which fall in different parts of speech. That has been very useful for me. And since the terms are grouped by topic, you can look through neighboring entries and pages of entries, finding all kinds of similar and related words, whereas, in a traditional thesaurus layout, the only thing adjacent to your entry would be those words that start with the same letters.

In short, what makes this thesaurus so wonderful is that you have access to an extensive range of word power, since the words referenced in the entry you're interested in are not limited to the space just below the word itself: they are spread throughout the book in logical groups, and the index quickly directs you to the sense of the word that you are interested in.

Don't get the ones in dictionary form..get this kind

Indispensable! I gave my old copy of this to my nephew going away to college. What a mistake for me! I was in graduate school at the time and had another thesaurus in dictionary form..and figured that would be fine. Yuck. I found myself wishing I had this version again..so I just bought another one.
The way I use it is not to come up with words to impress people (well, not usually) but rather to remember a word that I want to use, but can't exactly recall (must be my age). I know you all have done it and can relate to that great feeling of finally finding that word! The conceptual setup is perfect for this becuase sometimes you can get close with a guess, but you need that whole section on weight (for example) to really pinpoint your word (not just synonyms for heavy).

You can never go wrong with the tried and true

There are a lot of quaint reference guides out on the market today, but as a professional writer and teacher this is always the thesaurus I reach for. Not only are you provided with nearly half a million synonyms, but Rogets make the definition conise and meaningful.
You will find this book an essential part of your reference section be it 2 books or 200 books in volume. It makes little difference if you are writing a term paper or a business letter, you are foolish not to have this vital tool.

Collecting Garbage a Spiritual Mission?

Recently at our evangelical church we commissioned another missionary. There was the glorious announcement that another one of our own was headed to "the mission field," a prayer, and, of course, the laying-on-of-hands.

If you are part of churches like mine, you know the routine. At the bottom of it all is one central message: The highest calling from God, by far and away, is to be a missionary. Not far behind is that of pastor. Since I've been both, I've known a lot of sweaty palms on my balding head and the whole range of sincere to sanctimonious prayers for my safety, my witness, and my family. (Trust me: I'm not complaining.)

It's all wrong, says Darrow Miller in his new book LifeWork: A Biblical Theology for What You Do Every Day.

The core of the problem, writes Miller, is that evangelicals have a dualistic worldview, that is, they believe life is divided between sacred and secular realms. The latter exists to support the former: prayers, sweaty palms, and all (especially pocketbooks). Another way of saying this is that most of God's children are called to slave away in the secular salt mines of life so that a few who are spiritual enough can stroll streets paved with heavenly gold. Okay, I exaggerate, but just barely.

We evangelicals have lots of problems, and this is one of our biggest. Miller's book, like that of Dennis Bakke, the Christian entrepreneur who wrote the bestselling book Joy at Work, convincingly makes the case that it's high time we rediscover a biblical theology of vocation, the cultural mandate, and biblical teaching on the Kingdom of God.

The problem is that our pastors -- and the seminaries that train them -- don't get this message because they, too, are in thrall to a dualistic worldview that essentially and functionally ropes off the work-world from the reign of Christ (except to the degree that it is seen as a place to witness to "the lost"). Miller writes that in the 62 years since he has been a Christian, only twice has he heard a pastor preach on this topic. (Ask yourself when was the last time your pastor spoke on this.)

That Miller takes the time to unpack the economics of work, and not just the theology of it, makes the book well worth reading on that score alone. He unfolds the "three plain rules" of John Wesley: gain, save, and give all you can. Miller also does a good job of showing how "idealistic socialism" (are you listening Obama?) and "predatory capitalism" (are you listening Republicans?) are bastardizations of an economic system that I would call "compassionate capitalism." "Compassionate capitalism" savors market mechanisms while embedding them in a moral framework where the ultimate end (love for God and neighbor) regulates the immediate end (profit).

My only complaint with the book is that it needed an editor who could have easily have whittled down this 300-page book without losing a single thread of the argument. As it is, the size may intimidate some in an era when few books are longer than 200 pages and few people have the leisure for long reads.

Whether or not they have the time, this book should be at the top of your pastor's reading list. When will churches fill out their biblical calling and start commissioning accountants, garbage collectors, homemakers, computer programmers, bus drivers, farmers, business executives, artists, writers, and academics?

I, for one, am ready to see congregations become, in effect, the "church without walls," as Miller writes in his penultimate chapter. The pastor who starts seriously preaching this message, and who understands it is his job to prepare God's people for "works of ministry" (Ephesians 4) in and through the workplaces will attract people who are hungry to know whether their Monday through Friday work world has anything to do with God's plan for their lives.

We don't need more entertainment-oriented, seeker-sensitive churches; we need churches that make the robust claim, week after week, that God is at work through His people in and through their workplaces to advance the Kingdom of Christ.

I close with one bit of advice: Buy this book for your pastor as a Christmas present. Your fellow parishioners -- whatever their vocational callings from God -- will thank you.

Incentive and guidance to do "Thy Kingdom Come"

I had the privilege of being instructed by Darrow Miller back in 1996 while at a one week training conference in Phoenix with Food for the Hungry. He has the valuable hands-on history mixed with sound theology that results in bringing the important ingredient of street-cred to the ambitious scope of this book. Bringing the philosophy/theology of Francis Schaeffer into the current age and adding some very concrete applications of this thinking is the strength of this book. I have always gravitated to the term "compassionate capitalism" and was particularly interested Part 5 (The Economics of our Lifework) and how he addressed the tension between the current views on Capitalism vs. Socialism.

I especially appreciated how the Christian Worldview reveals the need for balance in the task of "doing good". Convincing the Church of its mandate to become involved in society is one task. How to do so effectively and consistent with scripture is quite another. Whether it be predatory capitalism squeezing every dollar of profit to pass to the shareholders without regard to its labor force or Malthusian environmentalism which considers each additional child an unnecessary carbon footprint, the Church, both liberal and conservative, is subject to hijacking from these and other predatory opportunists. This book is a must-read for the Church to not only motivate her but also guide her through this tangled web of self-serving pitfalls that seem to be inherent to the pursuit of social justice.

A fresh and captivating motive to Why Work!

The truths expressed in Darrow Miller's new book Lifework bring freedom from servitude, of a life spent doing what we don't want to do, but what we have to do in order to survive; in other words, to work! Darrow Miller clearly presents the truth that dignifies all of man's labor bringing freedom for him to work, not because he "has" to survive, but because he was created in the image of a God who works because He loves. So man is free to seek the kingdom of God and His righteousness through the vocation(s) God created him for, instead of seeking to first secure his food and clothing.
It's a must-read for anyone interested in having a righteous reason to work.

About the Author

Raoul-Gabriel Urma has worked as a software engineer for Oracle's Java Platform Group, Google's Python team, Ebay, and Goldman Sachs as well as for several startup projects. He's currently completing a PhD in Computer Science at the University of Cambridge and is a regular speaker and instructor.

Mario Fusco is a senior software engineer at Red Hat working on Drools, the JBoss rule engine. He created the open source library lambdaj, an internal Java DSL for manipulating collections in a functional way.

Alan Mycroft is Professor of Computer Science at the University of Cambridge, where he researches programming languages, their semantics, optimization and implementation. He is a co-founder and Trustee of the Raspberry Pi Foundation.

This is a concise and well-written introduction to Java 8

This is a concise and well-written introduction to Java 8.

With a bevy of new features, Java 8 represents a sea change in how the language has started to move in the direction of functional programming (likely as a result of the competitive pressures exerted by other JVM languages such as Scala), and this book offers an interesting take on all of that, from soup to nuts.

Here are some of the things I liked:

Pro's

* There are numerous quizzes that are generously sprinkled and interspersed throughout the text, which immediately follow the discussion of a given topic and help bolster your understanding of what you just read
* Clear and concise explanations of the new features in Java 8, often with a good dose of background and context which help explain and illuminate the motivating concerns of the language designers for introducing such changes
* Plenty of examples to help you sort out all the new features
* Brief introduction and primer on functional programming and techniques (Chapters 13 and 14), as well as a comparison of Scala and Java, and the blending of OOP with the functional paradigm (Chapter 15). Given the new direction which we're now evolving with the release of Java 8, these are useful things to have in this edition
* And with the bold statement of intent broadcast so clearly with the advent of Java 8, there is a brief look ahead at what will likely be in store for Java 9 and 10 in the near future

Con's

* The book assumes more than just a passing familiarity with Java, and to really appreciate the true extent and degree of recent developments, you need to have worked with several earlier versions of Java (e.g., starting with the introduction of the new for-each loop in Java 5, the tentative foray into parallelism with the introduction of the fork/join framework in Java 7, for instance), and a wary respect for the perennial NullPointerException since time immemorial in order to appreciate what Java 8 is now doing with the belated introduction of something like Optional as a better and more sane alternative to null, and perhaps finally put the last nail in the coffin of Hoare's "billion-dollar mistake."

* The section in Chapter 8 on refactoring and retrofitting existing legacy Java code base with the new features of Java 8 is a bit too short, for my taste, for such an important topic. Refactoring and retrofitting existing code base is a broad church. That said, it does reference other external sources for more info

One other point, which really doesn't qualify as a con, but would be relevant to anyone reading the Kindle edition, and so I'll mention it here anyway, is that in many of the code snippets in the MOBI format, the dash in the arrow token (for the new lambda syntax) is often rendered inadvertently as the line continuation operator, i.e., the dash of the arrow token appears at the end of the line, and then the greater-than symbol of the arrow token appears at the start of the next line, so that the arrow token of the new lambda syntax ends up getting split in two and hyphenated in the wrong place, which makes you do a double-take, as you try to parse the code with a line-continuation character, before you then realize it's really just the arrow token of the new lambda syntax.

This happens enough in the Kindle edition that it's worth a brief note here. But once you realize that's what's going on, it becomes a non-issue (and even a bit quaint, actually).

I also found the following comparison between Streams and Collections to be particularly useful:

"For readers who like philosophical viewpoints, you can see a stream as a set of values spread out in time. In contrast, a collection is a set of values spread out in space (here, computer memory), which all exist at a single point in time - and which you access using an iterator to access members inside a for-each loop."

That's a very nice, succinct way of putting it, and there are many other nuggets like that to be found in the text.

In sum, I would recommend this book to software developers, enterprise architects, and anyone else curious about the new evolutionary path which Java is now breaking, where the introduction of functional programming features plays a central role, but is by means not the only hint that the language designers are dropping to clue us in that many new and exciting changes are now afoot.

Java 8 - a game changer

This is a much needed book for anyone eager to get started with Java 8. Make no mistake, version 8 is a significant evolution of the language and it will change how many developers write their applications!

With that in mind, I’m pleased to say that all the main areas are covered. By these I mean lambdas, single abstract method interfaces, stream processing and default methods. But there’s more on offer here with chapters dedicated to refactoring, testing and the revised Date Time API (to name a few).

The authors haven’t just covered the feature changes though. As some programmers coming from previous versions of Java might not be entirely familiar with the functional programming paradigm, there is a substantial section of the book that will serve as a thorough introduction. There are also plenty of useful nuggets of information scattered throughout the text that will generally make you a better programmer.

So in summary, this is a great companion to get you started on your Java 8 and functional programming journey – so take the plunge, what are you waiting for?

The real Java 8 Features,explained!!

This book is awesome like the Java 8 feature. Loved the book to the core, here are the reasons for it:

1. Book starts with how to pass function in Java older versions and slowly build up on the talk ending up saying only thing we can do about this in older version is to apply strategy pattern, with the help of anonymous class
2. Then author shows how Java 8 itself, made it easy to pass the function without creation of anonymous class, which means without creation of Objects! Arguing how Java 8 made functions as first class citizens.
3. Then it clearly explains, whats the difference between Stream and collection, as its really important to understand.
4. All chapter have sidebar quiz, which is exciting to solve :)
5. Book also does the great job of explaining how we can create our own collectors, with Fork/Join framework.
6. Since lambdas are new to our toolkit, author show cases how they can help us in creating design patterns. Along with the topic of how to debug lambdas if things goes wrong.
7. Thinking functional way lesson, gives rock solid example for thinking in terms of functional programming. Author creates a LazyList to show, how functions can be stored and evaluated lazily when called!
8. At the end of the book, they made a comparison of Java 8 with Scala. How to do features like Pattern matching (in Scala) in Java 8 are covered here.

The book end's with what all changes can Java take and how it can be changed, shows clearly where does Java stands today.

One of the best thing about the book is the appendix. Appendix shows:

1. What all minor changes made to the Java 8
2. What all library got changed in Java 8
3. The last appendix explains about how lambdas is implemented internally, which does make the book outstanding.

Overall a great book for Java developers to get started with Java 8!!!

The author avoids explaining what he couldnt explain. Yet presumes to offer a "A scientific discovery"

Did the author forget this line in Exodus?

And the Angel of God, who went before the camp of Israel, moved and went behind them; and the pillar of cloud went from before them and stood behind them. So it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel. Thus it was a cloud and darkness to the one, and it gave light by night to the other, so that the one did not come near the other all that night.

Yet he would have you believe that the volcano was the smoke and fire pillar all rolled into one. Or maybe he didnt see another volcano to account for the pillar behind them? Just this fact is evidence that author avoided explaining what he couldn't and hope nobody noticed.

The whole book of natural explanations, doesent explain how these could have happened in such chronological order. Timed is what I would rather call it.

Hilarious and witty, must read

I loved this graphic novel, the writing is clever, the character interactions are hilarious, and the art work is stunning. Eurico, a pizza delivery boy in Lisbon, Portugal is kind of a nerd. He is picked on by a bully at work and pines secretly for the girl who takes the pizza orders. That all changes when his scooter is stolen by gargoyles and he enlists the help of Occult Detectives Dog Mendon�a and his partner, Pazuul. Pazuul looks like a little girl, but is actually a 6000 year old male demon and while he never speaks, his body language tells you all you need to know. Dog's job is to keep humans safe from the monsters in the world while also protecting the more benign supernatural creatures from violent humans. Dog, Pazuul and Eurico team up with a gargoyle head (Dog kind of ripped it off the body) when they discover a far more sinister plot: someone is kidnapping the children of Lisbon. Along the way we meet Vlad, King of vampires and nightclub owner, a cross-dressing oracle, and an army of zombie Nazis. This is an action-packed snark fest of a read.

The art work is fabulous, especially the backgrounds, which are vividly colored and detailed. There are many panels without dialogue but the action and facial expressions speak volumes. Not only was the dialogue funny, but the text was laid out in a way that enhanced the humorous tone of the story. For example, there is a four page scene where Dog and Eurico are hanging upside down and the text in their dialogue bubbles is upside down too.

At the end of the book there are eleven pages dedicated to how Filipe Melo took his idea from concept to graphic novel including lots of original artwork sketches. The story started out as a screen play, but Portugal doesn't really have a movie industry so the idea for turning it into a graphic novel was the next best thing. Filipe wanted to pay tribute to all the movies he loved growing up like Big Trouble in Little China, Gremlins, Back to the Future, and John Landis's An American Werewolf in London. The comic book Dylan Dog also influenced him. John Landis was so impressed with this Portuguese comic that he wrote the forward for it and took it to Dark Horse to see if they would make an American version.
