About the Author
Fergus McNeill has been creating computer games since the early eighties, writing his first interactive fiction titles while still at school. A brilliant debut you don't want to miss

Eye Contact, Fergus McNeill's debut novel has been on my wishlist ever since I first saw it on the publisher's website. What intrigued me about this story is the fact that there's no motive behind these murders. It's all just a game. And even before I started reading the book, I started wondering: how do you track down someone who has no reason to kill and whose victims have no connection to each other whatsoever? As a huge crime fan I've read many books from the same genre but never have I encountered one where the killer's only motive is the adrenalin rush, that strive for power and I was quite curious to see what would happen next and how the events would unfold. I had really high hopes for this one and I'm glad to say that McNeill didn't disappoint. McNeill's writing, unique plot and his ability to describe what's going on in both the killer's and his hunter's head are equally engaging from the very beginning and I found it very difficult to put this book down.

I loved the way McNeill dealt with narration. A third person narrator tells the story of both the murderer and the police inspector in a way that the first part of each section tells the killer's side of the events and the second half deals with the investigation process. It's interesting how, even though it's not the killer himself who tells us his side of story, we get to know what goes on in his mind before he decides to strike again and chooses his next victim. While he's a totally ordinary guy with a normal job on the outside, his thoughts are that of a madman. The character I loved the most, however, was the policeman who's working on Naysmith's case - DI Graham Harland. Harland is still trying to come to terms with the loss of his wife and he's quite a lonely, sad and depressed figure. I loved how much he's changed by the end of the story and his relationship with his colleague Mendel and I hope it's not the last we see of the two of them.

When I first saw this book I thought it would be a lot bloodier and more cruel than it actually is which was definitely a pleasant surprise. McNeill doesn't really go into details about the victims and the forensics' work like many thrillers and mysteries do - it rather focuses on how the police are trying to find a motive behind all this and find a link between these murders. Don't get me wrong, it's terrifying all the same. I had nightmares of being followed for two days straight after reading it and I'm not likely to forget this story anytime soon. But if you're looking for the next Hercule Poirot, this one's not for you. There's no snooping around examining the scene of the crime, questioning suspects and witnesses and collecting evidence - that's the point: there are no witnesses and there is no evidence. Naysmith is an incredibly clever and thorough guy whose attacks are carefully planned beforehand. He makes sure that there will be no witnesses and he doesn't leave anything behind, not even a footprint. Which makes this book all the better: you just want to know how the police would find someone who's as guarded as he is or what would be his downfall.

McNeill keeps you in the dark until the very end and you've no idea what's about to happen. Even thirty or forty pages before the end you just don't know if it's ever going to end or if Rob Naysmith is going to get away with it. I loved this book from start to finish and I would definitely recommend it for anyone who likes suspense and mysteries. Eye Contact will keep you on the edge of your seat all along and keep you guessing till the very end. It's a heart-pounding debut novel you don't want to miss!

Debut novels vary a lot. Sadly a few are dire. Others strike the reader as showing promise and start out well, but get lost a little along the way. A very few really hit the mark, and work extremely well on all levels. Pleasingly, Eye Contact was an absorbing read and definitely fell into the latter category much to the credit of the author.

If there is one single mistake which new authors tend to make, it is to overcomplicate plots. The result is often confused, overlong and unbelievable. However, here Fergus McNeill starts out with a simple premise - a serial killer who makes a game of murder. When he decides it is time to kill, he patiently waits for the next occasion on which a stranger makes eye contact with him. At that point they have nominated themselves as his next victim and he hunts them down. Unlikely - certainly. Impossible - by no means. There is no problem whatsoever in buying into this as a credible scenario.

The main protagonists are very capably drawn up and the author really gets under their skin. On the one hand we have the killer, Naysmith. Although predatory, totally ruthless and cold blooded he comes across as a real and rather frightening persona as we learn about both his life and background. In the other corner we have the investigating policeman who is a damaged character - which could be a bit of a clich� as it is by no means an unusual scenario in fiction. In this case he has not got over the premature death of his beloved wife who he still deeply grieves. However, again the characterization is done extremely well which makes the reader feel that they understand the man.

Set in the UK, the whole book is evenly paced, and does not lag at any stage. The climax and conclusion are interesting, satisfactory for the reader and somewhat subtle. Here we have an author who clearly understands that less is often more. This is a very impressive debut novel, and I will certainly be looking out for the author's next book. Highly recommended!

I thoroughly enjoyed this well-written book with its gripping plot and well-drawn characters. This is one not to be missed! I will definitely be looking out for future books by Fergus McNeill, who now rates highly on the list of my favourite crime writers.

About the Author

CHRIS SCARRE is an archaeologist specializing in the prehistory of Europe and the Mediterranean, with a particular interest in the archaeology of Atlantic façade. He has participated in fieldwork projects in Britain, France, Greece, and India, and has directed excavations at Neolithic sites in France, Portugal and the Channel Islands. Formerly Deputy Director of the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research, University of Cambridge, he is now Professor of Archaeology at Durham University, UK, and editor of the leading international journal of archaeology Antiquity.

BRIAN FAGAN is one of the world’s leading archaeological writers and an internationally recognized authority on world prehistory. He is Professor Emeritus of Anthropology at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he specialized in writing and lecturing about archaeology to wide audiences. ...very inadequate graphics...a major deficiency...

We used this book as the textbook for Origins Of Civilizations (anthropology course). Well written; very clear and quite readable. I downgraded the book to #3 stars because of the absolutely inadequate maps and illustrations. A major distraction from understanding the text: maps were too small and in black and white - so that detail was difficult to appreciate. With the varied availability of graphics in today's print media, this is a major shortcoming.
Graphs, timelines and photographs have the same criticism as they were very difficult to interpret and correlate with the printed matter.
This is a major problem and negative.

I loved this book

I loved this book. I found it easy to read and digest the information, but that may be because I have a particular passion for the subject matter. The author wrote in a very informative and instructional way without talking down to his readers. I would heartily recommend the book.

Bought as reference book

It's as dry as any other textbook. I bought it to use in research for historical fiction. It's adequate for the intended purpose, but I envision thousands of poor college students asleep and drooling on the pages. You'd think for the price of most textbooks they'd find ways to make the reading material a little more interesting. But then, why bother -- you're going to pay for it anyway.

A primary aim of this book has been to develop and present basic structural concepts in an easily understood manner using "building" examples and illustrations to supplement the text. Much of this material has been field tested, revised, and modified over a course of 25 years of teaching.

Introducing structural theory, without relying on a predominantly mathematical treatment, has been challenging to say the least—and a non-calculus engineering alternative to the topic seemed essential if the target audience (students of architecture, building construction, and some engineering technology programs) were to remain interested. Early on it was decided that a heavily illustrated, visual approach was essential in connecting and linking structural theory to real buildings and components. Using examples and problems that are commonly found in buildings and structures around us seemed to be a logical way of introducing mathematically based material in a nonthreatening way.

This text is organized along the lines of traditional textbooks on statics and strength of materials because it seems to be the most logical approach. A sound understanding of statics and strength of materials establishes a theoretical and scientific basis for understanding structural theory Numerical 5alculations are included as a way of explaining and testing one's understanding of the principles involved. Many fully worked example problems are included, with additional problems for student practice. An interesting, descriptive narrative of structural concepts may stimulate the student's interest in the subject matter, but it does not engage the student enough to ensure understanding.

This text is intended as the next step following a basic introductory course on structural principles (for example, Salvadori and Heller's Structure in Architecture–The Building of Buildings). Organizationally, the book consists of two parts: Statics in Chapters 2 through 4, and Strength of Materials covered in Chapters 5 through 10. Load Tracing in Chapter 4 is not customarily covered in statics, but was intentionally included to illustrate the power of the basic principle of mechanics and the use of free-body diagrams. Gravity and lateral load tracing are often covered in subsequent structures courses, but the fundamentals can be introduced at this stage without much anxiety on the student's part. Chapter 11 is included as a synthesis of the prior topics and summarizes some of the overall architectural, structural, and constructional issues outlined in the introduction to Chapter 1.

A heavy emphasis is placed on the use of free-body diagrams in understanding the forces acting on a structural member. All problems begin with a pictorial representation of a structural component or assembly and are accompanied by a free-body diagram. Illustrations are used extensively to ensure that the student sees the connection between the real object and its abstraction. Chapter 3 uses the principles discussed in the previous chapter to solve an array of determinate structural frameworks. Load tracing in Chapter 4 attempts to examine the overall structural condition with regard to gravity and lateral loads. This chapter illustrates the interaction of one member with other members and introduces the concept of load paths that develop within a building.

Chapter 5 introduces the concepts of stress and strain and material properties as they relate to materials commonly used in the building industry. The text would be greatly complemented by a course on the methods and materials of construction taken concurrently or before the strength of materials portion. Cross-sectional properties are covered in Chapter 6, again with an emphasis on commonly used beam and column shapes. Chapters 7, 8, and 9 develop the basis for beam and column analysis and design. Chapter 10 on steel connections has been added to this second edition to emphasize the importance of the interconnection of parts in creating a stable, functional, and economical structure. Elastic theory has been utilized throughout, and the allowable stress method has been employed for the design of beams and columns. Some simplifications have been introduced to beam and column design equations to eliminate the complexity unwarranted for preliminary design purposes. Sizing of beams and columns is well within the range of a final, closely engineered element sized by the more complex formulas. It is assumed that students will take subsequent courses in timber, steel, and concrete. Therefore, building code equations and criteria have not been incorporated in these chapters.

No attempt was made to include the study of indeterminate beams and frames since it would require substantial development beyond the purview of statics and strength of materials. Indeterminate structures is probably one of the more important structural topics for building designers since most of the commercial and institutional buildings of moderate size are of this type. Indeterminate structural behavior using one of the many available structural analysis software packages is emerging as a critical area of study for all future building designers.

This text is intended to be used for a one-semester (15-week) class or two 10-week quarters in architectural, building construction, and engineering technology programs. Chapters 4 and 10 might be of interest and use to the civil engineering student who wants to better understand building components in a larger context. Also, Chapters 8 and 9 might be useful for quick preliminary methods of sizing beams and columns. Although this text might be used for self-study, its real benefit is to supplement the instruction received in class.

Many of the topics covered in the text can be demonstrated in model form in class. Slides of actual buildings representing the subject being covered help to reinforce the idea through visual images. Previous teaching experience has been convincing about the need to use a variety of media and techniques to illustrate a concept. Structures should by no means be a "dry" subject.

Computers and the availability of powerful structural software for desktop and laptop computers have revolutionized the field of structural analysis and design. Most students enrolled in our programs are generally quite computer literate and expect extensive use of structural software in solving statics and strength of materials problems. However, it is this author's belief that the basic principles and numerical techniques used in this book are easily within the grasp and understanding of our students. A sound, fundamental working knowledge of free-body diagrams, equations of equilibrium, stress, strain, and bending equations are key to developing a mental framework for the understanding of structural behavior. Basic equations of equilibrium, although quantitative in nature, still evokes a qualitative, intuitive sense about a structure. Matrix-based computer programs are highly abstract and mathematical with little connectivity to real structures, except perhaps for the exceptionally gifted student.

Computers can certainly be used to supplement these early foundation structures courses and add to the student's understanding of structural behavior through the generation of graphically displayed output. Although there are many excellent structural analysis/design software packages available for purchase, reference will be made in selected sections of this book to free structural software of a limited nature accessible on the Internet.

As part of an ongoing effort by the United States to convert from the U.S. customary system of units to the international system of units (SI metric units), some example and practice problems in this text use the SI units. A table defining both the U.S. customary system of units and the SI metric units is included on page vii.

Illustrated Concepts for Architecture

Usually, when you're turned off by a technical book, it isn't because you're too stupid to read it - it's because the concepts lack illustration in a way that promotes stimulation. This book has big helpings of illustrations made especially to enhance the experiences of learning what would otherwise be difficult or at the least abstract ideas in statics. The thrust is architecture, but the worth of the book goes beyond architecture into engineering. Excellent for community college courses in construction and mechanics.

I am taking a Structures class for my construction management degree. I purchased this textbook as a back up to the one that was assigned. The illustrations and sample problems cover the topic clearly and systematically. I recommend the book for those interested.
