Wow! What a pleasure to read.

I think I'm a little in love with Riyria. Not in a weird, "Twilight moms" kind of way (although I'm sure both Hadrian and Royce are "totally hawt" or whatever the current trying-too-hard hip terminology might be.) I mean I'm in love with this kind of story. I love the swashbuckling action. I love the banter, even if it gets a little anachronistic. Then again, I loved the "Taming of the Shrew" episode of Moonlighting, and I'm pretty sure Bill Shakespeare didn't include a cover of The Rascals "Good Lovin'" in his original vision.

In other words, yes, I think the author is winking at us a little with some of that dialogue. (Example: Hadrian, upon looking at a tower that Royce has inadvertently destroyed: "I love what you've done with the place.") I'm okay with it because it makes me laugh. And I'm dead tired of fantasy that takes itself deadly serious. Reading is supposed to be FUN, guys. At least, it's not supposed to be so depressing you consider taking a leisurely bubble bath with your toaster by the end.

The worldbuilding is so nicely done, borrowing enough from the common vernacular of fantasy that you don't feel like you need to read with a decoder ring, but throwing some interesting original bits in as well. This book was just a joy to read. While the stakes felt high, and a lot of violence and corruption is implied, it doesn't ever become bleak and hopeless. There's a strong vein of optimism throughout, something sadly missing from the urban fantasy I've been reading lately.

I'm hoping the rest of the series is as strong as the first two books included in this volume. I'll definitely be picking them up soon.

I really wanted to like this series

I really wanted to like this series. It was given to me as a gift, and I was hopeful that a self-published author could pull off something great with these novels. Unfortunately, the result is a cliched, boring, and poorly written story. Completely uninteresting protagonists, less-than-two-dimensional side characters (only two of whom are women, and just absolutely terribly-written women at that), dialog that is nothing short of cringeworthy, an inconsistent and trite setting, and obscenely repetitive story structure. The dialog is a weird mix of modern English and what a modern English-speaker would think a medieval character might sound like. Within the first hundred pages you'll be presented with every fantasy trope in existence as if on a conveyor belt. There's nothing original about this story; if you've read any fantasy before, feel free to skip this. Many reviews talk about this series as "light", like it's a synonym for dull. This series would be great for a pre-teen just getting into the genre, maybe who has struggled with reading in the past...not so much for anyone else. If you want some lighthearted, fast-paced high fantasy that actually does something original and appears to have gone through at least a modicum of professional editing, go read a series like The Kingkiller Chronicles.

I'm not sure why my main review from goodreads and my blog didn't go through but I think it might have been too long. lol. I will keep this one short.

I got introduced to this author by friends reading the newest book "Age of Myth" on goodreads and I loved it. So I have been picking up his books so I can read all of the older ones and THIS book blew me away! It's one of my favorite books now.

I love Hadrian and Royce, I love the world and people that are in the books. The two books in this volume are amazing. The men get framed into a killing they didn't commit against the king. But the princess helps them and in return they help her with the prince and finding the real killer.

The second book has people from the first book and some more evil people and dark magic.

This is a wonderful world of magic, fighting, strong friendships and a few tears. As I have said, I love it and I hope more people will too :-)

Slim book, but full of substance

Created in 2013 after a successful kickstarter campaign , Weird Wars: Rome is a slender, strangely sized booklet - it sticks out on the shelf - that's short on page count but chock-full of good stuff.
The premise is classic: the horrors of war are real and are feeding on violence and misery, so that supernatural creatures and monsters become very real... in ancient Rome.

The basic handbook provides all that we expect from a Savage Worlds setting - characters, new setting rules, a good, quick but solid overview of the gaming world.
Just add the SW handbook.

A number of military campaigns is outlined in the handbook - ready to play.
* the Second Punic War
* the Third Macedonian War
* the Fall of Carthage
* the De Bello Gallico
* the Invasion of Britain
* the Boudicca Rebellion
* the Jewish Rebellion
* the Germanic Wars

Like other titles in the Weird Wars line (such as **Weird War II**), the game is geared towards miniature tactical action. In this sense, we can imagine scenarios in which our Roman Legionaries will first discover and investigate the horror, and than take it on in combat, on the field.
Now, I'm not so hot about using miniatures - after all, I've played Savage Worlds in a car, on the road, and in a number of other situations in which there was barely room for the dice - but Weird Wars: Rome is clearly one of the settings that really shines when the miniatures are on the table.

Another great feature of Weird Wars: Rome is the *Legatum* mechanics - a simple system that, while deepening the setting and making characters more connected with it, allows the keeper to run a multi-generational campaign, running through the whole of Roman history, from the Republic to the twilight of the Empire.
This is a fascinating opportunity, and it is very much in line with the Roman mindset, with the centrality of family and ancestry.
With the Legatum, sons may fight the enemies of their fathers.

The artwork is very fine, and there's a wealth of extras and accessories out there - handbooks, maps, paper miniatures, the works.
All in all, an excellent addition to my collection.

Gets You Rolling

I have to wonder what Mani's threshold for expectations is, with a one-star rating, and a review mainly consisting of "I didn't like it, Weird War II is better".

Let's have a look at production values--they are excellent, with beautiful artwork and layout, and the physical book is about the size of a graphic novel, which I sort of like, although I can see why some people wouldn't. I just like the idea of a book that I can carry in a coat pocket or something. How it works in play is another question, and one I can't answer--yet (I have quite a backlog of settings I want to play in).

If you own other Savage settings, Weird Wars Rome will be familiar. The character generation rules are about what you would expect, especially if you are familiar with the Weird Wars line. Decide what your character does and that will dictate most things about him. Your equipment is also pretty much predetermined (cutting down on shopping time) as money is replaced by "spoils" (a new system of rewards a little like Bennies, and used alongside them). New Hindrances and Edges are pretty standard stuff, including options for playing an officer or mystical initiate (which is sadly only for Seasoned characters, although this isn't unusual--Weird war II is the same way).

The GM is given helpful tips on naval battles and sieges, as well as a primer on Roman history and the regions of the Empire. There is also a random adventure generator, one of my favorite things about Savage settings. The "Legacy" Plot Point campaign is ... an unusual approach, but strikes me as appropriate considering that the Empire's history spans over a thousand years. And if you don't care for it, a number of other frameworks are detailed as alternatives (including both Punic Wars, Caesar's invasion of Gaul, Boudicca's Rebellion, the Germanic Wars, and others). As usual, there is also a bestiary.

In conclusion, the small size of the book means not as much of the work is done for you, but there are an awful lot of supplementary products Pinnacle has put out, and moreover, a GREAT DEAL of information about Rome just floating around on the Internet or in your library. Armed with the Savage Worlds Deluxe Explorer's Edition, Weird Wars Rome, a knowledge of where you want to take your game, and a willingness to explore a little, you should be well-equipped to defeat any of the Empire's foes--just like the Legionaries.

Great Fun!

Owning all things Savage I am taking the time to give my view of what I consider one of the best setting among many good ones. It is fresh take on historical fantasy and the system of command and squad structure beings interesting role playing opportunities that most open party style games lack. That along with great Radom event and interludes makes for a fun ongoing campaign possibilities. Well laid out, easy to adapt into other uses and good art make it a good value for the money.

I have both run an ongoing game and have been playing in a several week long campaign and will say the amount of fun has been one of the best bargains in the gaming industry.

Very good

The essays were more academic than I'd anticipated and I think they presuppose a working knowledge of Freud and psychoanalytic theory. I skipped around to the ones that interested me, meaning I didn't feel like reading all of them.

I've got an advanced degree in psychology; I understand from where this book comes and I thought it was just fine. Smart, worth looking at, but not as "nothing else like this" as the reviews seem to indicate.

Worth mentioning: Phillips is a child psychologist and his anecdotes, from his own practice, are about children.

A Pure Joy

Not only is this book rife with insights, it is also written with tenderness and the prose are crystal clean.

My background is more in theory. But I was struck by how plainspoken and easy to understand Phillips is here. --Jargon-free and straightforward. You certainly don't have to be a rocket scientist to follow him.

Personally, I feel just a little bit happier in my life for having read this book. It is profoundly sane. And great fun.

Terrific- Mostly

I picked this out due to an excerpt in my copy of the Faber Book of Science- also a high recommend, p.s. Wanted if for the chapter on worrying which was excerpted- a magnificent chapter that touches on hunting, etymology, and Charles Dickens. Also had high hopes for the chapter on boredom, which were met. That is a very stimulating (as in thought stimulating) chapter. The tickling chapter was the only letdown so far. The 3 pages there are a good start, but he just gave up on it. I anticipated a thorough insight into adult tickling erotica, such as who develops this fetish and why, but there is only a brief few notes on tickling in children. I suppose he never even thought of the topic as one that pertains to adults...And be sure to start at the Preface. He psycho-analyses psycho-analysis, puts psychology right on the couch and gets into its head, its inner secret thoughts. High comedy and high-brow and highly worth it. Great noteworthy read overall. My margins are full of scribblings.

About the Author

Wallace R. Blischke obtained a B.S. in Mathematics from Elmhurst College, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Statistics from Cornell University. His early employment included aerospace and consulting firms. He joined the faculty of the University of Southern California in 1972, where he taught in the School of Business for 27 years. Dr. Blischke is currently Professor Emeritus, Marshall School of Business, USC, and is a private consultant specializing in data analysis, experimental design, sampling, reliability, quality assurance, warranty, and litigation support. He has over 50 publications in statistics, reliability, warranty analysis, and related areas, has co-authored or edited five books (three on warranty and two on reliability), and has presented papers and lectures at numerous conferences and universities on five continents. Dr. Blischke is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and has served as Associate Editor of several scientific journals.

M. Rezaul Karim obtained Bachelor of Science (Honours) and Master of Science degrees in Statistics from the University of Rajshahi, Bangladesh, and a Doctor of Engineering degree from the University of Electro-Communications, Tokyo, Japan. For the last sixteen years he has been working in the Department of Statistics at the University of Rajshahi, Bangladesh, and is currently at the rank of professor. His research fields of interest are: quality and reliability analysis, warranty claim analysis, industrial statistics, bio-statistics, and statistical computing. He has considerable research experience in his fields, has published 15 papers in international refereed journals, and presented 20 papers at various conferences and workshops in seven countries. He has written a few chapters on warranty claims data analysis in such books as the Handbook of Statistics and the Encyclopedia of Statistics in Quality and Reliability. He served as an assistant editor of the International Journal of Statistical Sciences for two years and worked as a committee member of several international conferences and workshops on warranty and reliability modeling and analysis. He is a member of five professional associations.

D. N. Prabhakar Murthy obtained B.E. (Electrical Engineering) and M.E. (Applied Electronics) degrees from Jabalpur University and the Indian Institute of Science in India, and M.S. and Ph.D. (Applied Mathematics) degrees from Harvard University. He is currently Professor Emeritus at The University of Queensland. In the past he has held visiting academic appointments at several universities in the USA, Europe, Asia and Australasia.

Pra Murthy is the author or co-author of 165 journal papers and has presented over 150 papers at various conferences around the world. He is the co-author of six books, and the co-editor of three books and several conference proceedings. He has run short courses on various topics of reliability and warranty around the world and is on the editorial boards of eight international journals.

So far this book has been very interesting. I have just started doing this warranty analysis at work so this has helped bring a lot of things in perspective. It is technical at times with equations but looking forward to being able to do a better job by understanding more.

Great Books for a 2nd Grader

We stumbled upon “The Boxcar Children” movie a few months ago. My son loved it. When he realized it was a book he really wanted to read it. I ordered this box set of the first four books instead of just the first book. He is a 2nd grader who is just learning to love chapter books. These have been the perfect books for them to read on his own. The content is great and the writing is well done for a young kid to read and understand. The storyline is fun and the adventure is written in an easily relatable manner. The words the author uses are not confusing or difficult, but they are not simple and boring. My son has worked his way through these four books over the summer reading a chapter or two at a time. He usually chooses non-fiction over fiction so it has been nice to find a book series he enjoys that is fictional and fun. Each time he reads he comes and tells me about the story afterwards.

I bought this product full price for my families reading pleasure.

He is about reading level 1-2 and these are perfect. No really hard words

I have been looking for books that my 6,5 yo can read by himself that are longer than just 5 minute reads! Tired of books that he finishes in a blink of an eye. And omg, this is exactly what we needed! He is about reading level 1-2 and these are perfect. No really hard words, but not "cat sat on a mat" kinda thing either :) He also loved the movie that's on Netflix.

These books are great! I bought this set for my 7 year ...

These books are great! I bought this set for my 7 year old grandson. We read two chapters last night and he was completely engaged! On page 3 he says "grandma, I can see the children in my imagination! I see them walking down the road". By the time we got to the second chapter, he says "Why don't you read one page and I will read the next page". My plan is working! I am hoping that within a couple more evenings, he will want to read these books all by himself as he falls asleep. UPDATE: night 3, we read the first 5 chapters together, and he wakes up the next morning telling me how the books end! After I left his bedroom - assuming he was going to sleep - he pulled out the last book in the series to find out what happens to the children! He couldn't wait to know! And the best part is he picked up the book on his own to read. I am super happy!

Awesome Book !! You need to get a copy !!

This is an Excellent and well written book.. After spending 20 years in the "christian church" I was one day led ,
(almost forced) by the holy spirit to start questioning everything that I had been taught. And on my own, with the holy spirits guidance, Found the same teachings that are written in this book. One person after another that has "Come out of Babylon" has had the same experience, testimony, and better yet, Finding out the REAL TRUTH. Satan has used Christianity for the last 2000 years to keep people away from the TRUE way of our Messiah. Praise Yahweh for Men and Women like Scott Shoob that have the Courage to write these types of Books. My wife for the last 3-4 years has told me that I need to write a book Just like this, and If I ever did, it would cover the same topics. Great Job Scott, May Yah bless you and Your family and continued works serving our Father. Shalom !

I learned a lot from this book.

This is one of the more challenging (in an excellent way) books on the Bible and Christianity I have found. Made me think and question beliefs I had carried since childhood. Not sure I agree with every assertion the author makes, but I will be going back to study this again. We are told to be like the Bereans who tested everything against Scripture. Mr. Shoob does this, using no extra-Biblical sources whatsoever. I learned a lot.

Excellent Book! Scott has done a great job in explaining in simple, easy to read descriptions of what christainty teaches. Truth is shared about what Scripture really teaches, it will open your eyes! I recommend giving it to anyone who is searching for the right path to take.

Good compilition and artwork

This is a good compilation of stories, poems, sayings, songs, etc with wonderful artwork to go with them. I liked that all of the stories were relatively short. Some were only four lines and up to about 4-6 pages at longest length. What you choose to read can be chosen for many reasons like age of the child, length of the story, what they are currently learning, and how long they can focus. I strongly suggest that you preview each tale prior to reading to your child as some of the ending could be upsetting (like the gingerbread man who who gets eaten by the wolf or Solomon Grundy who is born on Monday and dies on Sunday.) Many of the stories can be used for teaching moments from science using the five fat peas poem to life choices/morals using the frog princess story about keeping your promises. The more difficult stories like the gingerbread man getting eaten, are better suited to for older children where they can discuss with you the moral (moral of this story: that you can want something so much or want something to be so true that you accept help/advice/support from anyone who offers it without considering the source of that help or advice or if it is something you should be doing/believing in the first place). Many of the poems would work for jump rope or patty-cake games. If you take time to research online I am sure you can also find out how to sing some of the songs like Farmer in the Dell. The book also displays diversity in that people range in skin and hair tones from very pale to dark and including red hair, white hair, and in case of some trolls green hair. Thumbelina is Asian, the frog princess is African, etc. However, I feel that the diversity could have been better and far too many individuals are still Caucasian. Not every page has people on it though, but it still would have been nice if all prominent stories were given a different race for the main character. I just want everyone to be equally represented. Overall, I am pleased with my purchase.

A Good Starter Volume of Fairy Tales

Ordered this for my young nephew. The stories are short and sweet for bedtime reading. The illustrations are not amazing, but they get the job done. Some of the stories/rhymes I have never heard of and are kind of bizarre, but for the most part, I'm very pleased with this purchase.

My son is 10 years old and he loves the stories in this book. This is my second purchase. I gave one as a gift to my son's teacher because the class did a baby shower and the teacher loves books so I figured she will love this book too. The stories are short so you don't have to spend 15 plus minutes reading one story. Some stories don't even take 5 minutes of your time.

Overemphasizes psychoanalytic theory, and the chapters are disorganized in how they present information.

I rented this textbook for my Health and Human Lifespan Development online course this summer at Georgia State. It's a little confusing how the subsections are set up in each chapter, at least given the fast-paced nature of my summer course. I could use the book and my notes for the quizzes, so I really had to read the chapters fully beforehand if I had any hope of immediately finding the answers. I even had to write down some page numbers. If you plan on using this textbook to find answers without reading, then you should make sure you have enough time to locate the information. Other than that, the information was fairly interesting. It just gets old to continually read about psychoanalytic theory. The social and biological information was much more interesting to learn about, in my personal opinion.

Life Span

This was a required text for my Life Span course. The book is very detailed and easy to understand. I like that the author includes marginal concept definitions and explanations using informative "bubbles", allowing one to readily skim through the book without reading every written detail allowing the student to be well apprised of the respective topics and concepts. I don't remember why I purchased the looseleaf book over the hardbound copy. Although the looseleaf contained the exact same pages as the hardbound, comparatively it is rather cumbersome. The publisher/copyright page was missing so I did not know when the book was published to use as a reference and had to copy a page from one of my classmates' hardbound book to accurately reference it. I think I would prefer having the hardbound copy instead.

If you need access codes for Online learning, this book does not have them.

I didn't read the fine print and ordered a loose leaf edition. Once the book arrived and I got over the shock that textbooks even come loose leaf, I realized the book did not have an access code for the online learning that was very prominently advertised as part of the book. Oh, the online learning was also required as part of my online class, so I had to ship it back and order another book. That book also arrived without an access code and I bought the 2nd book listed as new and when it arrived, it had yellow highlighter markings throughout the book. Had to purchase online access directly through McGraw-Hill for $25.00 extra in order to complete the required online portions of the course.
