Missing pages

There is an error in at least some of the printings. I sent mine back to Amazon, only to have the replacement have the same error. Page 253 has been replaced by page 353, with 353 also in the 353 spot. So you lose some of the GI drugs on page 253. Totally baffled why this review was rejected the first time but it was. Just trying to let you know what you might be getting with this book.

Mine also has page 353 duplicated and in place of page 253....Also, this version is NOT pocket size! It's about 5.5" x 3"...while it could probably fit in your white coat pocket it's very impractical and thick.

Disappointed

I have several nonfiction and fiction books on English history with a special interest in Henry VIII, so I was delighted to see this book come across as a free offering for the Kindle.

Unfortunately, I was horrified to see several sloppy errors early in the book - "Margaret Beufort," "Edward the Forth," and "King Louise." I almost stopped reading at that point.

The errors continued throughout the book - "was lead to the block" (led); "she remained demur" (demure); "in my sons defense" (son's); "baited breath" (bated); "weld power" (wield). At one point, Henry mentions "a fact that frustrated me as much as it endeared me to her." (It should have been "endeared her to me.") "The Spaniards live different than us."

I found Henry's increasing passivity to be out of character. By the time a certain lady came into his life, Henry was well used to doing as he pleased and getting what he wanted, and I couldn't quite bring myself to believe that Harry's existence would have changed that. An argument could be made that this aspect of his personality was solidified by that relationship and its events, which is not present within this story, but his characterization and actions just never quite rang true to me.

I don't have a problem with the fictionalization of history - I enjoyed "The Other Boleyn Girl," for example, quite a bit. The "voice" just never really "sounded" like Henry to me and I was actually rather surprised when I realized it was intended to be in his voice. By contrast, though, I did find Catherine's characterization to be believable and consistent, but it wasn't enough to redeem the book in my eyes.

I don't think I would pick up any of this author's other books even if they are offered as free books for the Kindle.

A Very Unlikely 'What-If'...

I wasn't crazy about this book, but that could be because I JUST finished reading Had the Queen Lived: An Alternative History of Anne Boleyn, which was an extremely in-depth and meticulously researched book about what would have happened if Anne Boleyn had not miscarried her son in 1536. That book's alternate history was very well thought out and definitely plausible.

When you compare that book to this one, 'Catherine the Inquisitor' doesn't stand a chance. To be fair, this book is more of a long short story than a novel, but I felt that Henry was nowhere near the man he actually was (I doubt his entire personality would have changed all because Catherine bore him son). In this book Catherine absolutely rules the roost. Not in a million years could I picture Henry, in ANY alternate history, bowing down to all of Catherines demands...he's the KING! One example was allowing Prince Harry to attend executions at such an early age...he knew it was wrong and he was uncomfortable with it, but Catherine did what she wanted anyway. And being the King, he absolutely could have halted the execution of one particular noble (I won't mention who...don't want to spoil it) quietly if he wanted to. Instead he let his wife and son override his own wishes...not in a million years. Henry LOVED power.

As for the ending, it was a disappointment. Henry's fate seems almost like the lazy way out, and EXTREMELY unlikely...all of it. Not only what happens to Henry himself, but also what happens to Prince Harry. While I obviously didn't love the book, I didn't hate it either. I think the idea of what the author is doing is wonderful. I assume there will be 6 of these books, and I'm interested in seeing what she does for each wife. I did purchase the next book, Anne the Saint (The Six Lives of Henry the VIII), and unless it's absolutely terrible, I plan to purchase the rest. While they're not the most well-written books out there, they certainly are imaginative...plus they're short, so it's no time at all to get through one. It's hard to say how I would have rated this book had I not finished the one I did before this. If you're interested in this time period and the Tudors, then I absolutely recommend reading this. If you really have a thing for alternate histories, then also pick up Ms. Nuckols book. It's a little more in-depth and MUCH more realistic.

Unlikely "What If"

Very unlikely a tyrant like Henry VIII would react anything like this. Putting 21st century mores in a 16th century setting doesn't work. Also, all the typos were very distracting.

One Of The Better Sacred Name Bibles

I decided to update this review as a newer version has been released in 2012.
This version is leather rather than hardbound. The verses (Ester 1:22 and John 3:6) that were missing in the first edition are included in this version.
The other significant change is that this version has study notes. That's a big improvement in my opinion!

This version of Hebrew Roots Scripture is one of the better versions. I have the Hebraic Roots Version Scriptures, The Halleluyah Scriptures, Scriptures of Truth, and Holman Christian Standard Bible to compare it with.
The problem with some Hebrew Roots Scriptures is the language. In some cases the language lapses at times into something close to the King James Old English. This can be evident in Psalms with some versions.
That may be a trivial complaint, but I prefer the Word to be easily understandable for me today.
This translation is in smooth, modern English. I would compare that aspect of it to the Holman. It is consistent.

The Introduction written by Don Esposito is excellent.
In it he identifies the texts that he used. He looked at a lot of Aramaic Peshitta translations in addition to the Textus Receptus, Septuagint, and Masoretic Text.

Some of the aspects that I appreciate with this Bible:

+ The order of the books. In the Renewed Covenant he placed the Pauline letters toward the end of the book before Revelation.
This order makes a lot of sense considering that Paul's books are more complex and putting them further back gives the reader a chance to understand the Hebrew letters first.
The Tanach has the two Chronicles at the end rather than the Minor Prophets.

+ The Aleph and Tav is shown in the Tanach where it is usually untranslated. The name of Messiah is translated in just under 100 locations in the Tanach. This gives more revelation of the Messiah and his identity in the Tanach

+ Uses the Names "Yahweh", "Elohim", and "Yahshua." The key to pronouncing the Creator's name is in the two "u"s. (Double u rather than double v.) Same pronunciation whether spelled "Yahweh" of "Yahuwah."

+ A big plus is the wording of Psalms 40:6; Psalms 22:16; Genesis 10:24; Exodus 1:5; Deuteronomy 32:8; and Isaiah 61:1 which follow the Septuagint rather than the Masoretic Text. In my opinion what makes this Bible version one of the better that I have found is the wording of Psalms 40:6. Compare that verse in the HRB with any modern Bible. Now look at Hebrews 10:5 which is Paul quoting that Psalm.

I haven't found a perfect translation and this version is not without a few translational differences.

* Avner is not listed in Yahusha's genealogy of Matthew 1:13.

* Hosea 14:2 has "calves of our lips." "The ISR Scriptures" 1998 version footnotes it as "referring to offerings." The lone verse I have found that could have used a footnote.

* I Timothy 5:17 has "Let the Elders who minister well be counted worthy of double pay..." Some translations have it "double honor" or "double respect."
A minor variation on wording.
The accompanying footnote explains that the elder working full time has the the right to receive tithes.
These are all debatable issues in the "for what it's worth" category.

.Another aspect of this version is that the names of the books are all left in English which should make it convenient for those readers not familiar with Hebrew names.

The leather and paper are high quality. This version does not have the signs or errors of something rushed to printing. It's well done!

After comparing quite a few Scripture versions and Android modules this has become the one I think is most accurate if you prefer the Septuagint over the Masoretic Text for the Old Testament. I think it fares well in the Renewed Covenant also.

Fabulous translation

I have more than 20 translations of the bible, and generally go back to the Hebrew roots to understand certain passages beyond the translation discrepancies. Though many scholars today are aware, some still don't yet realize the bible was written in Hebrew first--including the "new testament" (Brit Hadashah actually more implies "RE-newed Covenant". Though many of the new testament books were translated into Greek nearly immediately, even the thought patterns and codes are essentially Hebrew. In addition to that, many of the books have been discovered in Hebrew form in recent years, validating the integrity of the text.

This "Hebraic Roots Bible" translation is certainly the closest translation I've read so far. I even have the pdf version of each individual book on my phone for reading wherever I am. There is a rare typo now and then, and occasionally a grammatical error (such as listing Cherubs in the half English half Hebrew notation, instead of the Cherubim to keep it entirely Hebrew plural), but they are minor. I have yet to find a translation that didn't have some of those. Overall, the original text, and especially the Names are by far the best I've been through. I have not read this one all the way through, but more than 50% (keeping the translation issues and languages in view).

Blessings to the translator for efforts at preserving the Living Word of God! I hope it will be released in Kindle format.

A must for study!

I personally use this version to better understand certain verses from the KJV, and it has proven to be incredibly helpful for my understanding as a whole. It now accompanies me in all my Bible studies. Comparing it to the original Hebrew has proven this to be a legitimate translation.

With that said, comparing this HR Bible with other Hebrew Roots translations, I have found this one is much less biased in the translations themselves. However, the second edition has added some biased commentary. Although, it doesn't take away from my studies since it's not put into the verses. Other translations have obviously strayed from what was originally written to express their own personal beliefs, but this one adds that view at the bottom of the pages. And regardless if I agree, it's more helpful to keep it separate. But, it does bring into perspective the Old Testament prophecies and how they related to Hamashiach.

In conclusion, there's no other Hebrew Roots version that comes close this one, even despite a few grammatical errors. The next best thing would be an interlinear in my opinion.

I don't ever recommend Bibles to new readers outside of the KJV, at least for a starting point. But, this one I have felt comfortable recommending. It doesn't take away anything, but it does add to the experience of reading His word.

Sean is the founding editor in chief of Horsesmouth, a New York-based company that creates educational programs on retirement planning, Social Security, Medicare, college planning, and cybersecurity for industry professionals from top firms including Ameriprise, LPL, Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley, Northwestern, Raymond James, and UBS. He pioneered computer-assisted reporting in the late 1980s, along with his colleagues at the News & Observer of Raleigh, using public-record data to probe government programs. Sean was honored by the North Carolina Press Association for his investigative reporting, covering local politics and white-collar crime. Devin first experienced the shock associated with identity theft as an 11-year-old in 2002. An easy read, with valuable tips that are easy to apply

I started reading this book feeling pretty sure I already knew a lot of the tips in it. Nope! I learned a lot and so highly recommend it to almost anyone: from those who know little about phishing, id theft, etc., to those who are smug in their belief they know it all. (Hint: you, too, will probably learn something valuable.)

"Hack-proof" is an easy read, with easy-to-apply and extremely valuable tips. It doesn't preach or use scare tactics, but instead provides brief examples for each issue or problem and then focuses on how we can avoid similar problems. I plan to get several more copies to give as gifts.

Great guide for computer security awareness

Far Side creator Gary Larson wrote that a high-school biology teacher once told him she showed her class a number of Far Side comics at the beginning of the school year and most of the students didn't get the humor. She said a goal of the class was that by the end of the year, they should have learned enough science to see the humor in the comics.

Similarly, by the time a novice reader finishes Hack-Proof Your Life Now! The New Cybersecurity Rules: Protect your email, computers, and bank accounts from hacks, malware, and identity theft, they'll know enough to appreciate what they have to do to secure their accounts and systems.

Similar to How Not To Be Hacked: The Definitive Guide for Regular People by James DeLuccia, this is a very helpful book for the computer user who knows that computer security is crucial thing to do, but may feel too overwhelmed by the myriad highly and often overly technical books to do something about it.

In the introduction, authors Sean Bailey and Devin Kropp give the reader an opportunity to discover their cybersecurity score. For those that don't do well, by following the action steps the book suggests; they can ensure that their score is in the secure range by the time they complete the book. The authors do a really good job of showing the reader what they can do to ensure that the computing practices they use and systems they work off of are as secure as possible.

The 3 parts of the book focus on these 3 areas: online, finance and awareness. Many of the suggestions are not so surprising easy and effective. For example, they suggest using a secret email account for financial accounts rather than your primary email address. Rather than using the same email address for everything, which over the years can spread to hundreds of sites; the use of a secret email account for financial accounts can limit the ability to have these accounts breached.

In the section on backing up data, the authors suggest that one should never pay ransomware. That may be good advice for someone who has already backed up their data and has it stored in a location where it won't be re-infected. But for the person who neglected to perform a backup, paying the ransom may be their only option to get their data back.

The truth be told, even if you followed all the advice in the book, you still could not hack proof your life. The truth is that the best you can do it to try to be hack resistant. And for those that want to do that, Hack-Proof Your Life Now is an excellent book to get them there.

Perhaps this summer's boomlet of historical movies and costume dramas have sparked interest, for this is only one of several recent books by historians examining films set in the past. Editor Carnes (Secret Ritual and Manhood in Victorian America, LJ 8/89) persuaded 60 historical writers, including such popular figures as Gore Vidal, William Manchester, Antonia Frasier, James McPherson, and Frances FitzGerald, to write an original piece on an historical film. The authors gleefully skewer, pick apart, praise, and censure film classics such as Gone with the Wind, Mutiny on the Bounty, A Man for All Seasons, Spartacus, Jurassic Part, Patton, etc. There is, not surprisingly, considerable nitpicking over historical details, but the writers seem to share a common fondness for the movies. Indeed, several confess that their interest in history was first awakened by a film they saw as a child. Film buffs will thoroughly enjoy. A John Sayles/Eric Foner debate about the balance between veracity and dramatic license setsthe stage, then the curtain rises on Jurassic Park as reviewed by paleontologist Stephen Jay Gould. Scoffing at that movie's premise (revivifying extinct organisms) and criticizing its operating stereotype (the hubris of mad science), he establishes the pattern that imbues this volume with a rich and often risible character. For easy as it is to laugh at moviemakers' mistakes, it becomes more illuminating to ask why they warp or omit the facts. Errors in war movies, here in healthy numbers, seem to be a congenital if innocuous feature of the genre, but they tend not to inflict as much damage on popular perception of the past as do, say, some westerns or film biographies. The public becomes even more vulnerable to deception in such movies as JFK, a major mugging of the facts about Kennedy's murder, just as Birth of a Nation reinforced an earlier generation's belief in the virtues of white supremacy. Wherever historical reality meets celluloid imagination, this book's historians limn the collision with appealing conciseness, and an attractive layout replete with stills and sidebars further moves things along. Worth reading

If you're a film fan and a history buff, like I am, you'll definitely enjoy this book. Most of the articles are written by mainstream historians, and they are generally well done. Two misfires, however are Stanley Karnow's review of JFK, and Bob Woodward's review of NIXON. Karnow knows nothing about the JFK assassination, and instead focuses on misleading the reader, assuring us that Kennedy would have done the same as LBJ did in Vietnam. Woodward is a poor choice to review Oliver Stone's NIXON, because he props up the official story, and was himself involved in it under fairly suspicious circumstances (as described in the book SILENT COUP).

About the Author
Washington Irving Was born in New York City in 1783. He lived in the United States, England, and Spain (where he served as an American diplomatic attache). A prolific author, Irving wrote The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent., Diedrich Knickerbocker's History of New York, The Alhambra, and biographies of George Washington and Christopher Columbus, among other works. He is best remembered, however, for his two most famous stories, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip Van Winkle."

If you're a lover of a

Washington Irving was once a really popular American author. Now he's almost forgotten. Except in Granada, Spain. He lived in the famous site of the Alhambra almost 200 years ago and wrote of his experiences there. He was a great lover of stories, and he includes in the book some of the stories and legends he was told there, tales of ghostly happenings, warriors imprisoned in caves for hundreds of years, betrayals and successes of the rich and the poor.
If you ever plan to visit the Alhambra, do read this book. In Granada you can buy it in the original English, in Spanish, German, French and Italian. It's the perfect complement to this famous place.

Fascinating Stories

Washingrton Irving is a gifted writer who makes you feel like you are living in the 19th century in the Alhambra. I loved reading about this amazingly beautiful place that I had just visited. He made it come alive to me all over again.

Funny, informative, well-written

I bought a copy of this book at a gift shop at the Alhambra in fall 2010, read it on the train back from Granada. It was definitely a unique experience to read the book after visiting the setting itself.

Irving relates some very interesting stories of his own experiences including humourous character sketches and sweeping scenery descriptions. Don't read this book like a tour book... obviously Spain has changed immensely since the time of its writing. Irving also collects some very interesting legends of the Moorish/Arabic community from Andalusia. His tale of the Legend of Prince Ahmed Kamel could be turned into a Disney movie with just a few musical numbers thrown in for good measure.

Overall, a very enjoyable read!

The content of the book is good. I think I could learn a lot from it if I could get it downloaded onto my devices. It will not download onto my android or iPhone at all. I have to keep removing and downloading it to my laptops. It is ridiculous! I have never had this much trouble with any of the other books I have bought
