An Excellent Study of the Birth the Modern American Legal Order

This is a concise study of the birth of the American legal order as we know it today. As historians have observed, the Civil War was a greater social revolution than the political break with Great Britain. This volume details the legal revolution that followed in its wake, abolishing slavery once and for all and completely altering the balance between the federal government, states and citizens by guaranteeing citizens, who now included newly freed slaves, federal rights against state governments. There is also a fascinating discussion of the contradictions of the Confederate legal system, which, pushed by the necessity of war, was far more centralizing that the Confederate rhetoric of "states' rights" suggests.

About the Author

Andrew Ang is the Ann F. Kaplan Professor of Business at Columbia Business School. He is a financial economist whose work centers on understanding the nature of risk and return in asset prices. His work spans bond markets, equities, asset management and portfolio allocation, and alternative investments. Prof. Ang has served as associate editor for several leading journals, and he has received grants from various government and industry organizations. He has consulted for several financial institutions, most often the Norwegian sovereign wealth fund. Prof. Ang received a Bachelor of Economics with First Class Honours from Macquarie University, Sydney, and a Masters of Statistics and PhD in Finance from Stanford University.

A wonderful book

This book presents finance as informed by the latest research. However, it is reader-friendly and actually enjoyable to read.

The unifying thread is factor investing, i.e. that you are really investing in assets that have various kinds of risks, and that it is these risks, not the asset (which merely serves as a wrapper) that are important. In particular, an investor should be aware of what would constitute "bad times" for him or her, and how assets (and their risk factors) would perform in such times.

Along the way, the author does an excellent job explaining why diversification works, why rebalancing one's portfolio is the best strategy for most of us, and what rebalancing actually does (effectively the investor is "short volatility"). Many other aspects are covered, including such current "hot topics" as low volatility strategies, how to hedge against inflation, and so on.

While many of the ideas are quite advanced, the author succeeds in making them simple enough that non-specialists can follow along. He is also careful to draw out implications for individual investors, who don't have powerful number-crunching and other advanced tools.

This should not be your first book. While the discussion is from first principles, it does require a level of comfort with the basic concepts. But if you have read a couple of the introductory books, and are wondering what to look at next, I strongly recommend this.

good but too many typos

Spent a weekend to crack it. Generally speaking, this book is fine. I like the fact it presents current research status of finance, though much of research is related to the author's work. On the other hand, this book has tons of typos, which must make you wondering if there are many errors in the content. The ideas presented in the book are simple and straightforward, however, they can be described in much more concise way through less than 10 math formulas. Basically, the fancy word of "factor investing" is to sort out sources of risks/factors and through a top-down framework to weigh if the investors are willing to collect the risk premiums by bearing a set of risks, i.e. possibilities of losses at bad times.

Good book but not for individual investors

Asset Management is useful because it provides a good background on "factors" that are persistent over the long-term and it promotes portfolio rebalancing. But, these are really old ideas for serious students of finance. In addition, the book fails on practical implementation, especially for individual investors that do not have tens of millions of dollars to invest (institutional investors or portfolio managers of high net worth individuals hopefully already know these concepts). For example, a portfolio that is long value and short growth is necessary to exploit the value premium. But, this strategy already poses several problems for the individual investor. First, as an individual investor, you have to be willing and able to short stocks. That's asking the individual to increase his/her leverage, which some may not be comfortable with. If investing in stocks is like gambling, this strategy is like doubling-down on your bet. The author acknowledges a long only value portfolio will not yield high returns. Second, there is no guidance on which value stocks and which growth stocks do you have to invest in. Even if there were guidance, this poses several problems for the individual investor. The first is the access to market data and fundamental data, which could be expensive and/or time-consuming to collect. Then, even if you have access to the data, you need to have the analytical skills to identify which stocks you would select. Finally, you would have to balance out transactions costs, so you have to be selective in picking which stocks and the number of stocks that you would go long and short. Third, portfolio rebalancing is an easy concept to implement if you have two index funds: one equity and one fixed income. However, if you have a portfolio with more than two assets, there is no guidance on which asset you should sell if you want to reduce exposure to a particular factor and which asset you should buy if you want to increase exposure to a particular factor. In the case of the long value and short growth, which of the stocks should I rebalance with including consideration for transactions costs?

"Tempered radicals" may not sound like the type to start revolutions or topple corrupt governments, but in the corporate world, it is often these quiet change advocates that get the ball rolling and policies changing. In her thoughtful study of employees whose differences place them outside the mainstream organizational culture, Debra Meyerson uses this term for those who want to succeed in their organizations without compromising their ideological beliefs and personal lives.

People who hope to "fit in without selling out" operate on a fault line, says Meyerson. While contributing to their companies' success, they support agendas that are often at odds with the dominant culture. This can involve their social identities, such as race, gender, or sexual orientation, or their philosophical values and beliefs, such as a concern for social justice, environmental sustainability, or family-friendly working conditions. They are not radicals in the sense that they want to enact a marked departure from the traditional, but tempered radicals in that they both challenge and uphold the status quo, working "within systems, not against them." Seeking to map the space between conformity and extreme radicalism, Meyerson conducted in-depth interviews with almost 200 people in three very different organizations (though both interviewees and companies were given pseudonyms, the companies are easily identifiable). The result is an insightful look at the way these people effect change, including the varieties of ways to stay true to oneself (through psychological, self-expressive, and behind-the-scenes resistance), how to leverage small wins, and how to organize collective action. There's also a lengthy chapter on the difficulties these tempered radicals face, from the psychological stress of constantly straddling a duality to the incremental lures of co-optation. Having taught in MBA programs at both the University of Michigan and Stanford University, Meyerson is an accomplished business professor; this book shows her to be a methodical researcher, sensitive interpreter of results, and well-organized and fluid writer, as well. Good on politics, slight on deeper issues

First, let me start by saying that I liked this book and have been recommending it to others. As a "tempered radical" I wish that I had read this book early in my career. I had the wrong impression that hard work and results were enough as long as there were no bodies along the way. Young, naïve, and idealistic. Consequently, I am recommending this book to people starting their careers so that they get the reality of work as well as to others who just do not get that their approach is a major irritant to the powers that be.
I also liked this book because the author used her premise to package her ideas so that her tempered radicalism around race, gender, and other legally protected groups could be better heard by others. I came from academia too (and even received my PhD from Michigan where she had an early appointment in her career) but left that environment because of the oppression of free thinking and any kind of difference. This background added to my wish that this book had been around 10 years ago. I might have better succeeded in that environment if I had had this framework from which to work.
Although I like this book, I did not give the book 4 or 5 stars because the best of her book and the most important aspect of her premise was saved until last - the downside of the "tempered" approach. I do believe that revolutionary results can be achieved by evolutionary steps - small steps can achieve great things as they add up without the major heartburn or resistance that a revolution can cause. However, maybe evolution is not the best means to the ends and that cannot be decided until one decides whom they are and what they are about and decide whether tempered or full scale radicalism is what they want to do. This is a choice and is worthy of exposing at the beginning of the book. So although I may have succeeded in academia if I had had her premise from which to work, I would not have been happy because I would not have been true to me and the essence of who I was or am.
Evolution vs. revolution. To choose one must first know what one is willing to give up.

It's not about time management, it's about task management

One sentence summary: Build an effective and efficient team, don't waste time on nonproductive tasks and do what you enjoy doing.

NOTE: You may think that this book is not for you since it specifically states that it is for "Swamped Salespeople," but when you think about it, we are all salespeople in one way or another.

As a small business owner and entrepreneur, I am always looking for ways to make more time. Of course, everyone knows you can't make more time, but as Todd Duncan and his book Time Traps demonstrates there are ways that you can make better use of your time. The key is task management.

Here is a one sentence summary of each of the chapters:

1) Chasing the Wind - Don't try to manage your time.

2) The Identity Trap - Determine how to spend less time "working" while still being productive.

3) The Organization Trap - Stop wasting time (e.g. checking email every 5 minutes)

4) The Yes Trap - Stop saying yes all the time.

5) The Control Trap (get ready for a reality check) - Build a team!

NOTE: At one time or another we have fallen into the Control Trap. Remember, the first step to recovery is admitting that you have a problem. :)

One other thing that I like about this book is that there are executive summaries for every chapter, so you can get a really good idea about Duncan's recommendations in an hour (or as long as it takes you to read through 9 executive summaries and the last chapter on Freedom).

This is another definite addition to the Corea Properties and Esenai libraries.

Very good suggestions for improving efficent working and life improvement

If you are like me you are looking at this book because you have a busy schedule, or a seemingly endless list of tasks that mutates and grows with each waking moment. Todd Duncan has been there and offers some help as to how to stop the bleeding. This book was recommended to me by a Pastor who put the points of this book to good use in his own life with very positive results.

This book isn't really a strict time management text as the title suggests. As the author points out, there are many books for this. Rather, Time Traps tells you how to be more efficient by freeing up time to do what you do best (in this case, making sales). So rather than be a slave to email or the phone, the author offers practical suggestions as to limit tasks that are not really that important to the bottom line. For example, if you have necessary paperwork, find someone else to do it by hiring an assistant or seeing what resources your company has to offer. Don't spend your time filling out paperwork, spend the time doing what really matters, the task for which you were hired. As a research faculty member, who seems to have to spend more time doing academic busywork than actual science sometimes, the themes of this book ring frighteningly true to me.

Although the book is marketed towards salespeople, there are important efficiency improvement techniques that can be learned by people of all professions. The book quotes stats that the majority of salespeople spend 43% of their time managing problems and administrative tasks (it could be worse in academia!). There is a discussion on how salespeople say yes too often ... the same applies to researchers who sometimes take on too many projects and thus devote to little time to actually doing the projects well.

Some of the items here aren't immediately applicable to other professions. For example, as a research faculty member I have a responsibility to train students, which is a inefficient but rewarding task. It is not something that can be completely delegated, although after reading this book I see how what I am doing can be improved. And research is a highly non-linear process. In other fields the concepts taught here might be more exactly on the money, so I would definitely invest time to read the book. But the idea that we define ourselves by our work is right on for all professions; how many times do we think that 80 hour work weeks sound impressive ... only to see the effects this has on marriages, health, and children. This book will help in at least some ways to keep that output but require less hours to do it.

The book has a slight Christian theme, but the author has a lot of neutral "live life to the full" concepts that should not be too offensive to non-Christians. The book is a quick read, and easily accessible with many modern-day references. In all I think you will find a lot of uplifting and helpful information here that just might improve your life.

How to get 4 extra hours out your day...without working late

Early on in my career, I was given the advice to "touch each piece of paper only once". This is a utopian ideal, that doesn't actually occur on planet earth. In my line of work, there are up to eleven individuals involved in the average transaction, and i am supposed to somehow coordinate ten or so such transactions each month.

This book is for anyone who has worked a 12 hour day, and still had work spill over into tomorrow. Put another way, if you've ever thought to yourself "there must be a better way", then you ought to not only buy this book, but also read it from cover to cover.

No matter how efficient you may consider yourself, you will be surprised at how much room for improvement there actually is. This book offers simple commonsense solutions to the various "time traps" that tend to steal away hours of our valuable time, often without us being aware of the extent.

One of the major concepts is that you can't manage time, but you can manage "events". The book suggests various ways to study and perfect how you use your time, and suggests that if you "take care of the minutes, the hours will take care of themselves".

You might also consider checking out "High Trust Selling" from the same author. Both of these books introduce their ideas as laws or concepts which fit into an overall business and life philosophy. The ideas introduced are based on a study of top producers and superstars in various industries.

These books are both an excellent investment and a good read, and will probably change your entire outlook on time management and running your business "by design".

I used this series for private tutoring. My students were highly

Excellent introductory ethics text

Having taught philosophy for nearly 30 years, I've had ample opportunity to review quite a few philosophy texts, including ones that focus on ethics. Lewis Vaughn's "Doing Ethics" is one of the best. It is well balanced between general and applied ethics. The first three parts include chapters in subjectivism and emotivism, deontological ethics, consequentialist ethics, virtue ethics, evaluating moral arguments, and the power of moral theories. Part 4 covers abortion, euthanasia, capital punishment, pornography and censorship, sexual morality, affirmative action, environmental ethics, animal rights, warfare, terrorism, and global economic justice. Vaughn presents his own detailed analysis at the beginning of each chapter. The readings that follow are well-balanced and where applicable combine classical and contemporary contributions.

The Not so Complete Guide.......

I bought this book as a source book for self sufficiency ideas, what I found was a book with a lot of ideas but not enough substance to even warrant the purchase. This book was written as an introduction to the basic concepts of farm and off grid living. The topics are covered in such a limited fashion that the detail needed to implement the concepts is not in the book. This book needs more technical information and needs to be about one hundred pages longer to cover all that is in the table of contents.

An Excellent Inroduction to the Self-Sufficient Lifestyle

In these times of international and domestic unrest, rampant increases in food and fuel prices and general discontent, the thought of leaving the rat race and setting up a small farm doubtlessly has appeal to nearly all of us. Before you do so however, I strongly recommend that you read this book. The authors having been living a self-sufficient lifestyle for decades and are well qualified to share their experience.

The book covers a wide range of topics and while certainly not exclusive (there have been entire books written on areas which they cover in a few pages) they do provide a nice overview of topics such as location selection, alternate energy options and water supplies as well as tasks such as home soap making, candle making, beer and wine making etc. The greater portion of the book is devoted to crop growing and a wide variety of crop choices and planting styles are covered. The specific care needs of each plant are covered as are harvesting requirements. The raising of farm animals, including though not limited to cows, chickens, goats, ducks and pigs are also discussed. Most helpful I think are the A-Z checklists for various herbs and crops and the "Planning the Year Calendar" which outlines the various farm related activities which must be done throughout the year.

While the Bridgewaters are residents of England and their book has a somewhat UK centric focus their helpful address section has many American companies and their advice is readily applicable to prospective self-sufficient types in the USA.

SAVE YOUR MONEY!

This is NO WHERE NEAR a "complete" guide! It gives you an overview, but you could never achieve self suffiency with this book alone. There is simply not enough detail in any of the areas. For livestock you get about 2 pages, maybe 3 that give no where near enough info. If you are just wondering about some basic stuff, it could be a interesting read. But if you are planning on trying to "live it out" skip this book altogether. One of the BEST is Carla Emery's Encyclopedia of Country Living. Now with that, you can become almost 100% self sufficient!
