So close

This book does an outstanding job of explaining the early history of the m1 combat helmet. The pictures are beautifully detailed, and explanations are clear and simple.

HOWEVER, for almost $100 I was severely disappointed that this book does not contain any lot # data lists that can be found in other less expensive m1 helmet books. That alone stops me from referring to this book as the "bible". Secondly, this book has zero information on swivel bail helmets. Swivel bail m1's were present through a lot of fighting in the last year of the war, and I am appalled that the author didn't find it necessary to include it in this book.

Again, the lack of heat stamp # charts and the fact that there is zero information on the swivel bail helmets stops this book short of being a masterpiece. It is excellent if you are just concerned with fixed bail helmets, but I just think it wouldn't have been difficult to devote a single chapter to the swivel bail, especially for the price tag.

Great Photos and info -But it has the most 'typos' I've ever seen in a book.

If you collect M1 helmets, this book is terrific for it's in-depth info on everything associated with the helmet, from nape straps to male and female snap fasteners.
Wonderful photos on quality pages are invaluable for the collector wanting to see the details an various helmets. It is BIG book!

HOWEVER, I am amazed at how many gross misspellings, typos, and grammatical errors that are present. It is amazing that those mistakes went to print.

As far as content, I wish the author included a dating timetable for the McCord heat stamp, as is in another book on the subject.

Even with those annoyances, you will get almost all the info you need to be a smart purchaser of a M1 helmet.

Best M1 Helmet Book

I have all the books that I know of that cover the WWII M1 helmets and this book is the best of all. I only wish that I had purchased it first. Mark Reynosa also has a good book covering the M1 helmet, which I'd rate second, but a distant second. The descriptive illustrations are excellent in this book, and much better than the Reynosa book. There is also MUCH more information in this book, and it's presented in a much easier to understand format.

There are also many more photos of actual helmets, in addition to the excellent technical photos. If you only buy one book about the M1 helmet, this is the one you should buy. The price may seem a little high, but once you see the book in person it seems a bargain. It's MUCH larger than Reynosa's book and filled with valuable and interesting text, along with much better photos and layout.

Surrogates 2

Integrates nicely with the original Surrogates.

Pros:
~ in addition to the main storyline, all subordinate story lines also fit seamlessly (e.g. when Margaret gets her first surrogate)
~ the artwork helps the reader to immerse into the environment of the story
~ solid story telling

Cons:
~ some of the dialogue is hackneyed; reminiscent of an 80's cop drama
~ I expected The Prophet's revolt to be more dynamic.

Overall, an enjoyable read. The supporting literature enhanced the story.

A good read, but not as good as the original

I read The Surrogates because of the movie with Bruce Willis. The graphic novel and the movie were two completely different stories in the end and I enjoyed both. One of my main complaints about the original graphic novel, though, was that the story didn't feel as deep as it could have been. The idea of the world, of people using surrogates to live their lives, to keep them safe and to give them the freedom to live out some of their fantasies, is just too good and too perfect. It opens up a HUGE amount of possibilities, and I thought that the original book could have used this world to explore so much more.

Which meant, of course, that I needed to read the prequel graphic novel The Surrogates: Flesh and Bone to see if they did indeed play around with some of those possibilities.

Flesh and Bone takes us back to something mentioned in the original graphic novel: the attack on a homeless person by three rich teens illegally using their fathers' surrogates. The homeless man dies and suddenly the case becomes international news, bringing up the serious question of whether children should be able to use surrogates, a theme that was also addressed in the original graphic novel and was the main motivating factor behind Steeplejack (the main "bad guy" in the original). And this type of question is what I was hoping that the authors/artists would explore more about this world, what makes the world they've set up so intriguing.

Here, the graphic novel once again centers around Harvey Greer--now a beat cop--and the investigation surrounding the death of the homeless man. There's also a seedy lawyer for the father of the main kid on trial. (The father's no picnic either.) We see the origins of the Prophet, and the state of the surrogate corporation at this time period. The more interesting aspects of this graphic novel are how the corporation handles the situation, and how the law is going to be affected by not just this one situation, but by surrogates and their general use by the population. Those were the parts that intrigued me the most and held my interest. And the authors do explore these facets of the new world to some degree. The investigation gives the story a strong structure that's easy to follow, but isn't as interesting overall, especially since the first graphic novel was centered around an investigation.

So, in the end, I wasn't as satisfied or as thrilled with this prequel as I was with the original. Even though the authors explored some of what I was looking for, I STILL finished the novel wanting more. I wanted more exploration of this world, and I thought there could have been more depth in the storyline itself, especially regarding Greer and his relationship with his wife and how the introduction of surrogates into the home was affecting relationships. But it was still a good read overall. There were some nice touches to the world, and a few strong snippets of humor throughout. One particular panel had me laughing so hard I had to put the book aside to recover. Strong artwork (although not as polished in my opinion as the original) throughout, and a decent storyline. A good book. If there were more graphic novels set in this world, I'd definitely read them, because there's still a TON of things to explore.

The artwork and story telling in this volume is excellent. I'm a big fan of the genre and find that the rough artwork fits with the bleakness portrayed in the story.

If you are a fan of the Surrogates, pick up the prequel. You won't be disappointed.

Great book

The product arrived earlier than expected. As stated in the description there was some damage but nothing that took away from reading. I would recommend this book for anyone who is interested in the policy process

Wake Me When It Is Over

I do not think I have ever taken this much time to read such a short book. At least it seamed to me that it took a long time. It was like walking up a never-ending hill. The only reason I kept plodding along is that I was interested in the overall outcome. What I am trying to say is that the book is dull. It is also that the subject is a bit on the non-sexy side so coupled with the authors "mathematics textbook" style of writing, it made a little book into something close to the Battan death march. Ok, I may be overstating it a bit, after all I did work my way through the book. The one good thing I can say is that the first half of the book was far better then the second half. How the author turned his already dull prose into something that was almost life threatening I will never know.
With all this said there were some parts of the book that gave me some insight on how legislation works its way along the process. The part I thought was most interesting is all the groups that stick their hands into the bill. People with what appeared to me to have almost no or little effects from the bill got involved and tried to get their two cents in. Plus all the back handed and obstructionist activities made me wonder how anything gets done in Washington. Overall the book was dull, but did offer a tour of what it takes to get a bill passed. There has to be better books out there on the topic, I just do not know what they are.

Steven Waldman does an excellent job of explaining the substantive issues surrounding the national service bill and its corollary, student aid reform, and showing how conflicting ideals were reconciled or submerged. The detail gets a bit tedious in the last chapter, but the book does live up to its subtitle. Johnson & Broder's "The System," about the 1994 health care reform campaign, is a longer but more exciting book along the same lines.

Great memory book for your child's keepsakes

This particular purchase was a gift for a friends son, but I still have my 12 year olds sons book from 4 years ago. It's full of stories to be completed by your child and so funny to look back on when they're older. The hardback is very durable, has held up through a crazy (now 12 years old, as the photo shows:) ) boys toting it around and a move. I'll be holding on to this forever.

I love how it's a diary, but not

If you have a kid between the ages of 7 and 12, who LOVES The Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, you have to get this book! My 10yr old begged and pleaded, and begged more for this book. When it arrived, you would have thought I was the coolest and best mom ever!

I love how it's a diary, but not. The kids get to make their own dialogues with some helpers. Highly recommend this "Do-It-Yourself" book for all kids who love the series. I think my son was done in one weekend filling it out (in pencil).... a few weeks later, he went in and erased a few things, and re-wrote. This has given him the desire to write his own books. Love it!

This is such a great series for children. My niece was so happy to get them, she's 10 and she read all 10 in 5 days. She ate them up, any book that can make a kid who has video games and a computer on hand choose it instead is worthy of buying.

About the Author

Shiho Kishimoto is an award-winning author, whose accolades include the Tenth Shinpusha Foucault Masterpiece Award for the best short story anthology for Lottery and the Aichi Publishing Critic’s Award for I See a Stranger. I Hear Them Cry, published in Japanese in 2003, earned the Toyo Shuppan Literary Award and marked Kishimoto’s debut as a novelist. Kishimoto graduated from Japan’s Women’s College of Fine Arts. She lives in Tokyo.

Raj Mahtani has been a Japanese-to-English translator since the early nineties, and currently works closely with TranNet, a Japanese literary translation agency in Tokyo. Among Mahtani’s recent translations are Reiko Saegusa’s Tale Winds, Akiko Hoshino’s Painted Cookies, Fumitada Naoe’s Live with Meaning. Die with Passion, and Randy Taguchi’s Fujisan. Mahtani holds a BA in international affairs from Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon. He lives in Yokohama, Japan.

Story of child abuse and self-indulgence at war

I can't tell if the stodgy prose was due to a bad translation or just this isn't the best-written book. The themes are lofty; Mayu, is an idealistic young Japanese woman, who goes for a romantic life as an artist in Paris but ends up marrying for money and position. She is torn between her love for her husband, or at least her attraction to the life of comfort while being stimulated to pity by a French priest, who shows her the seamy underside of life. She flings herself into the rescue of an abused child with hardly any thought, just feeling. She seems ok with using people.

This is an unsettling story, but Japanese fiction can often be unsettling--perhaps to jostle and shock out of conventionality and acceptance of unbearable situations? It's an interesting novel but I didn't particularly enjoy it.

Good Social Service Message, Questionable Messenger

Don't be put off by the very first disturbing pages of this book. The message is honorable: Child abuse and neglect destroy young souls, validate abusers' pitiful values, and program a generation of new abusers. This is reiterated by the follow-up lecture by a real-life director of family counseling.

But as material for a novel, Shiho Kishimoto's I Hear Them Cry seems directed more towards teenaged girls preoccupied with getting their Fantasy Guy. Humane childcare is secondary to the message that an impoverished young artist can be transported from her modest, multi-job existence to a life of surface-level romance, passionate sex, Chanel suits, and business empires.

The main character is Mayu, a Japanese young woman who arrives in Paris to sample the bohemian post-graduation lifestyle. She works hard at several jobs and becomes involved with a program that assists wayward children. But she seems robotic in her approach to enlightened service to others. Most alarming is she automatically slaps the face of her very first charge. And her instant solution to a second child's case of abuse is to deliver additional physical abuse. Clearly, Mayu may not be the best role model against child abuse.

And yet Mayu IS set up to be the heroine. But when she meets the roguishly handsome Shigeki their attraction eventually makes her forsake her modest existence and values. A third incomprehensible case of child neglect occurs when Mayu gravely imperils another child via her lack of attention.

Throughout the book, Mayu hardly finds herself in a meaningful way. Neither does the reader get any real insight into her actions, especially given there is no cycle of abuse in her family. Instead, we see Mayu succeed in the pursuit of her man by using his son to get closer to the very privileged family. Hardly the role model I would have chosen for a book on child abuse.

Thought provoking, but not for everyone.

"I Hear Them Cry" begins with a startling act of abuse - then follows Mayu, the young artist at the center of this oddly unsettlinging novel as she moves from Paris to her native Japan.
The novel is clearly divided into two sections, the first set in Paris. Mayu is immersed in a world of poverty, violence and abuse where she tries her best to be helpful but seems to lack the wisdom to offer real solutions.
The second section follows Mayu after her marriage to a wealthy Japanese wine merchant, to her native country where she finds that violence and abuse are as prevalent in upper crust society as they are in the poor and bohemian world she left behind.
Written in a fluid, almost poetic style which works at times, but just as often falls short.
"I Hear Them Cry" is thought provoking, but definitely not for everyone.
