Reconstruction's Freedom Road

Even though this fictional book was assigned for a class in Civil War history, it turned out to be an enjoyable assignment. It is a very readable account of Reconstruction from 1865 to 1877. The book describes how well Reconstruction was working for recently emancipated slaves in South Carolina, and how bad it was going for the elite southern whites there. It does an amazing job of portraying the positive struggles of African Americans, and some working class whites, and how they were succeeding, until the final withdrawal of Union troops from the South.

This book is fun to read in the beginning, but the sad consequences of Reconstruction bring it to the inevitable conclusion. This does not detract from the book's accurate portrayal of what really caused Reconstruction to fail.

This is an excellent book that you will have no trouble reading in one sitting. If you read this book, you will understand what really happened during Reconstruction, and the real facts that they failed to tell most of us in high school. This book was published in 1944, long before most US historians recognized how southern historians had distorted the country's view of Reconstruction. Thanks to recent historians, we now have a much more accurate picture of this era.

Some strong moments, but overall a silly plot

I remember reading this when it first came out. I thought the artwork was beautiful and it had a really dark, gritty feel. Even looking back, I have to say Dark Empire really produces an emotional response like no other work in the Expanded Universe timeline. Some moments were really wonderful, such as Leia's use of the holocron and the approach of the Dark Side guards on Byss. They really brought back some of the sense of "ancient mysteries" in the Star Wars universe.

Unfortunately, overall the series is just too riddled with plot holes and half-baked dialogue. It seems like overnight everything that had been achieved after the Battle of Endor was all for naught. Meanwhile, I don't mind the fact that Luke goes over to the Dark Side for example, but it's never really clear why or how he takes that momentous step. It's like at one moment he's spying, the next he's switching sides. By contrast, despite all the criticism the prequels get, I think they did a good job of showing why Anakin turned to the dark side and that it was a consequence of specific choices. In Dark Empire, it's almost like Luke just slips out of character.

I think a lot of fans imagine that Dark Empire series never happened. It certainly diverted the Expanded Universe from Timothy Zahn's more sophisticated plots. However, I do think DarK Empire has some value, especially as one of the truly dark entries into the Star Wars universe. I suspect you'll enjoy it if you want to - and are willing - to see your favorite heroes in a new light. You might get frustrated though if you care about the plot and continuity.

About the Author
Ronald Harwood came to England from South Africa in 1951 and studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. He was an actor for seven years, and began writing in 1960. Since then he has written numerous plays for the stage, including 'After the Lions', 'Tramway Road', 'Interpreters', 'Another Time', 'Quartet', 'Equally Divided' and 'Mahler's Conversion', and an adaptation of Chekhov's 'Ivanov'. He also wrote the screenplay for the film of his West End and Broadway hit, The Dresser, which received five Academy Award nominations, including one for Best Screenplay, and the screenplay for The Pianist, the Palme d'Or-winning movie directed by Roman Polanski.

About the Author
William Young is Professor of Religious Studies at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri. In addition to The World’s Religions: Worldviews and Contemporary Ethical Issues (3rd edition, 2009) he is co-author (with Christian Hauer) of the widely-adopted textbook An Introduction to the Bible: A Journey into Three Worlds (Prentice Hall, 7th edition, 2008) and author of Quest for Harmony: Native American Spiritual Traditions (Hackett Press, 2006). During a thirty-five year teaching career, he has introduced generations of students to the world’s religions and taught a wide variety of special topic courses ranging from Religion and Politics to Spiritual Ecology: Religion and Nature.

I bought this for class, the book is very well set up and everything.

The information in the book was no intriguing to me because I am not interested in religion but I did learn a lot that I did not know.

My mom actually read it for fun and said it was good.

I come from a non religious family but both my parents were raised Catholic.

Fairly Up-to-Date, lots of good info

Pluses: Interviews, real-world knowledge of the ins and outs of the music business, how to make it big, promote yourself, sell music online.

Minuses: Some recent developments are a bit dated, but still good information. Focuses a lot on legal issues, copyright law, court cases that pit the big music labels and RIAA against those who threaten the status quo.

Overall, a good summary of the business environment and challenges (and opportunities) for music professionals in the current day.

Great resource for any musician or indie band entering the recording and/or performing arts industry.The information is presented in layman's terms or defined when needed. This book is filled with valuable information that even seasoned musicians (I'm an AARP member) can use who are just starting to record and distribute music. Information on copyright law, licensing and promoting music via the web is presented in great detail. I reiterate: A great resource!

Best book I have read on how to learn Animal Communication

I am a big fan of Joan's teachings, in fact I am a graduate of her Communication With All Life University. I felt, even though I have taken years of her classes, this e-book is like no other animal communication book I have ever read. It provided me with wonderful reminders of all the information I learned. This is great for anyone at any level. This e-book is an excellent refresher for what I learned at Joan's workshops, and it puts all the information into a very easy to use, reference format. It is also great for someone who is just taking their first class, as this is a wonderful companion book to the teleseminars or workshops. It will help to let you know what you will learn, and it's as if Joan took the best notes ever for you.

Reading through this reminded me of important information that I have forgotten when taking the workshops, there is so much to learn and some instances don't come up all the time, so therefore you may not remember all the suggested ways to handle situations you will have with a customer and their pet. You will find very helpful information, no matter what level of animal communication you are at, like the example Joan gave of how you can recommend something for a client, by saying "We could think about... or We could look at.". This was particularly helpful because it is easy to forget some of the important ways of wording the information we receive from the animal and how to deliver it to their guardian in a way that doesn't off put them. Because if we get good information and then deliver it in a way as to put them on the defensive, you may have lost the opportunity to help them and their animal companion.

I had such an amazing time throughout the entire University experience and I really value what I learned not only in workshops and teleseminars, but in the live interaction with people and their pets for homework. And the fact that as a graduate of almost two years ago, I am still able to get these e-books and continue my education and remember important tools and tips to grow my current animal communication business. I also appreciate that she saw enough importance in my journal entries and my "homework notebook" to use my examples in this book of how we progress and learn to trust the information we get.

As Joan mentions in her book, my biggest experience with not trusting the information I received was when I talked to a rescue horse and I got lots of information that made sense to me and the lady who knew the horse. The one thing I got that I couldn't make sense of, and hesitated to pass along, was that one of the horses favorite things was a butterscotch candy. Now, I have horses and I know they like peppermints, but butterscotch, I had never experienced that. So, I pass it along and it meant nothing to the lady I spoke with. I let it go and hoped the rest of the what I read her was valid. Then the next morning at 7:30 AM, I got a call and she said she passed along what I got from the reading to the other lady that fed and took care of this horse. She told her about the butterscotch candy and the other lady said, "no one could have known that, I had peppermints for all the horses and ran out. So I dug in my purse and all I had was a butterscotch candy, so I gave it to this horse...wow I had no idea she liked it that much" What this also did for me and the client was validate that I had truly connected to this horse and that what I got was valid and helpful to the horse and the people taking care of it. Some of the information I provided also helped them to determine the proper home for this rescue horse, so it was a great success for all of us. I hope that my experiences now can help others to believe in themselves as they go through and learn this important work.

I am really looking forward to the upcoming books in this series as I think these will be the most complete, comprehensive training manuals on animal communication in publication, and help you to do this as a profession and be successful.

Bad Dealings - Fraud

I read both of Joan's books and found them inspiring, but you can't judge a book by its cover (literally). I was so inspired by her books; I enrolled in her online Animal Communication course, paying $1050.00 for the course. And this is where she truly showed her colors... From the start things went south. I got one excuse after another to why I wasn't receiving course material or the pricy Webinars. She delayed me until I was unable to work with my credit card company for a refund. I made several concessions for partial refunds or just sending me the e-books, but all I got was silence or a host of excuses. It's now over 4 months down the road and I am out what I paid for the course. I have now submitted an online fraud complaint to the FBI.

I understand that this review isn't directly related to the book, but I wanted to share the type of person Joan has shown me to be. Do you really want to read a book about 'helping' animals, and the people attached to them, when in reality she is someone that cheats people out of money??? To me character matters when I read a book of this nature. If the author has no integrity, then the subject-matter is meaningless. Reflect on this before you consider purchasing a book written by her. She has truly shown me the ugliness of people and money...so much for your karma, huh Joan?

I have taken Joan's classes and am a graduate of her Communication With All Life University. Love the classes and love the book. This book gives you some very simple but very effective little tips for communicating with your own animals. Very helpful and very insightful. If you are at all interested in communicating with your own animals it's a definite MUST have. Joan is a wonderful teacher and it continues in this book.

BEST D/s M/M Book ever written

If you have never read a Zoey Derrick book, I suggest you start. Start at the beginning, and Aryn will be right here waiting for you to catch up.

As a fan of Zoey's writing, and herself, I knew what to expect. A lot of sex, romance, and steamy scenes that make you all hot and bothered. Hence: Read one handed. I didn't expect to read Aryn's Desire, and getting blown away. Now let me say this to you. If you are someone who thinks that male on male action, is gross, nasty, and distasteful, I suggest you pick up Aryn's Desire, or any of the 69 Bottle's series, Defining US is a good one also; and read. Zoey knows how to make a scene in a book erotic, pleasurable, hot, steamy, and most of all you can picture yourself in the book, and with the characters of the story. That to me is a GREAT BOOK, and a very talented Author.

Aryn "Beck" Becker, bodyguard for BOLD INTERNATIONAL. If you are a avid reader of 69 Bottles like myself, you know him as Beck. What you don't know is that his love life or lack of, has been giving him s***, since NYC with 69 Bottles. (Taming Dex Book 4).
Being bored with the bar floozies, Aryn is in a slump, and heads to Dex & Raine's house. Dex, his best friend, and his wife Raine let Aryn on a little secret about their life.
While Aryn has no clue about that lifestyle, It's something he wants to try.

While in complete shock, Aryn thinks maybe that lifestyle is just what he needs. He needs a submissive. But as you go on Aryns' journey of learning about who he is, and what he desires, he comes across Derek and Cotah, (1 week 365 days, through out 69 Bottles Series). Derek introduces Beck into the D/s lifestyle. Beck knows he wants to be a Dom, but everyone else sees him differently.

While meeting people from that lifestyle at Derek's party, Aryn comes face to face with Caden Mathews. Caden a Master, is shocked to feel what he feels when he meets Aryn. As the journey continues, you get everything , and while I'm not going to go into details, let me tell you, that reading this book, will change the way you think of two men together.
After watching a scene play out at the Box, Aryn's desires are surfacing, and he doesn't know how to take it.

The erotic sense of this book is so compelling, that you root for them, and maybe at some point your heart will break just a little, but, you hope in the end it will be just like you want it end.

I leave you with this. Aryn and Caden are perfect together in every way. It just takes a lot of people to convince them, but in the end, does it work out? Will Caden let go of his past to see a future? And will Aryn finally realize that what he wants is not always what he needs? Read Aryn's Desire, I promise you, you won't be disappointed.

Beck had some issues growing up, they left him feeling lonely, unwanted and to an extent unworthy.
While on tour with 69 Bottles he had a different woman every night, hit it an quit it, never giving them his name or number.
Now the tours over and he finds himself lost. He can't connect with anyone, trolling bars for a fling isn't working anymore. He's never been a man to want more, to want permanence and he believes that's still true, but he needs something different to get him back on track.
Enter Dex and Raine.
They invite him to a BDSM club with them, to give him a taste of something new, see if it may be what he needs.
Once there he comes to some serious realizations. While he likes control there's a reason behind it. Thinking he could walk in and learn to be a Dom was his first mistake, completely refusing to accept that he may be submissive was his second.
Master Caden loves a challenge and that's what he sees Beck as.
It's obvious to him that Beck is submissive, but Beck is straight, he loves women and that makes it all the more challenging for Caden.
Poor Beck, the guy goes through so much to learn who he is, what he needs and to come to terms with it. As much as his friends try to help him it's something he'll need to do on his own and his story takes you on and up and down roller coaster ride of self discovery.

As with all Zoey Derrick books, I loved it from beginning to end. Loved seeing some of the guys from 69 Bottles, I really enjoy new series that cross over from a previously adored series.

Another knock out of a book! Such a great read. I enjoyed every page. One of those books that I just didn't want to put down. Zoey's writing just keeps getting better with each book she writes!
