A great version of the international edition! Every detail same as the regular 7th edition, just a whole lot cheaper

A few important comments about this version of the international edition. We use this text book in my introductory chemical engineering thermodynamics class and there are other students in my class who also bought the international edition and the chapters are incomplete, there are no English units, and the printing quality is very poor (sometimes with whole sections of tables missing!). Also the homework problems are different for many students in my class since the values are only in SI!

On the other hand, this version of the international edition is word for word, page for page the exact same as the regular 7th edition. I am the only student in the class with this version of the international edition (and honestly I feel really lucky about that!).

So what is the difference between this international version and the normal 7th edition? I guess just that this has a soft cover. And it was $35 instead of $150!

If your class is using the regular 7th edition, I HIGHLY recommend this copy of the international version as it has the exact same contents (like I said, even the page numbers are the same). Other students in my class with other international editions seem to struggle following along with homework problems and examples. So keep an eye out for international versions with this cover (my textbook is the only one in the class with this photo on the cover)

For the actual contents of the textbook, I actually enjoy the book. There are a lot of rigorous mathematical discussions of thermodynamic properties. The problems are pretty standard, and there are a lot of examples worked out in each chapter. Unfortunately the textbook only grazes over statistical and molecular thermodynamics (I mean really, really graze - just a few mentions of statistical thermo and a short chapter on molecular at the end of the book).

Southern Afghanistan was slipping away. That was clear to then-Captain Rusty Bradley as he began his third tour of duty there in 2006. The Taliban and their allies were infiltrating everywhere, poised to reclaim Kandahar Province, their strategically vital onetime capital. Dispatched as a diversionary force in support of the main coalition attack, Bradley’s Special Forces A-team and two others, along with their longtime Afghan Army allies, watched from across the valley as the NATO force was quickly engulfed in a vicious counterattack. A Letter from the Author President Obama announced that 10,000 U.S. troops from Afghanistan will return home this year and another 23,000 will redeploy by summer 2012. For me, it wasn't an announcement. It was an order by my commander-in-chief and a decision well above my pay grade. Debates over troop levels and strategy are left to the men who wear stars on their uniforms or suits in Washington. My war is one that is fought every day like it is Sept. 12, 2001, whether I am in Afghanistan or not. As an Army officer, I watched, initially horrified, as the planes hit the World Trade Center and knew that I was going to war. I've done so five times. But my view has always been from the ground floor. I am the action arm of my commander-in-chief, not a policy maker. In the summer of 2006, my orders were simple: partner with the Afghan army and assist the Canadians as they launched a major NATO offensive through the Panjwayi Valley in southern Afghanistan during Operation Medusa. The mission didn't go as planned, and my fellow Green Berets and I, with our Afghan allies, seized a key hill--Sperwan Ghar--from Taliban and foreign fighters, taking the pressure off our Canadian allies trapped in the valley. Over the next eleven days, we held off wave after wave of Taliban fighters before we finally broke them. I spent the rest of that rotation building a base and establishing a series of checkpoints that attempted to secure the valley. We did the best we could to keep the lid on things in Afghanistan until the cavalry arrived. And they arrived last year. With the help of the U.S. troop surge, we were able to establish new footholds, consolidate our gains, and expand Afghan Security control while driving the Taliban from several of their critical sanctuaries, including the Panjwayi Valley. I returned to the valley last summer to assist in establishing security, development, and governance in the valley's villages. As part of a program focused on building up one village at a time, I helped coordinate aid and the training of local police from the district level with the goal of creating a stable local government that could eventually link in with the national one in Kabul. What our units did in 2006 is still a very critical part of the narrative there. Afghans know of the battle for Sperwan Ghar, still remember it, and still know me because of my thick gray beard. The outcome of the battle changed the way the Taliban operates. Where once they fought brazenly in the open, they now hide like cowards in among the Afghan people and fight with IEDs and suicide bombers. And they clearly know the difference between the Special Forces and conventional soldiers and give the "bearded ones" a wider berth. While the other parts of country are now under control of Afghan security forces, there is still very much a fight in the south. The Panjwayi and Zhari districts are key territory because many of the Taliban's leaders are landowners there. This is their center of gravity and the birthplace of their movement. So they are essentially fighting for their homeland in every sense of the word. It is here that the extra troops matter the most. This summer, the key battles and in some way the fate of the war will be decided on this same battlefield. I am often asked what I think we should do in Afghanistan. I have my opinions. But when I put on my uniform every morning, that opinion doesn't matter. I know only one thing: my mission was to go to southern Afghanistan, disrupt the Taliban, and assist the Afghan people in building a country. And I did that. Do troop levels matter? Absolutely. Every soldier, every commander, wants the best equipment and the most men. But I'll worry about troop levels when I have stars on my uniform. Right now my job is to execute the orders of those who do.

About the Author
Major Rusty Bradley was wounded during the Battle of Sperwan Ghar in command of a Special Forces A-team, on his third combat tour as a Special Forces team leader. A native of North Carolina, he graduated from Mars Hill College and enlisted in the Army in 1993, serving as an infantryman for six years before earning his commission from Officer Candidate School in 1999.
                                      
Kevin Maurer has been embedded as a reporter with the U.S. Special Forces and 82nd Airborne Division in Afghanistan and Iraq more than a dozen times in the last five years.

A squad of Special Forces saves a major coalition battle from the brink of disaster. A must read!!

Unbelievable what these brave US Special Forces achieved against 100's of taliban fighters. These were to be a blocking force. Instead the regained the initiative and took key high ground. They used a tactic that to this day still remains a key strategy, take and hold the high ground. Keep in mind their main mission is to train indigenous troops also. A small squad of roughly ten men along with 20 to 30 Afghanistan National Army soldiers saved a major mission from the brink of disaster. This book is now among my favorite modern military books. Highly recommend, you will feel a sense of awe, pride and inspiration after reading this!

A must read

This is the story of the most important battle of the war on terrorists you never heard about. This should be made into a movie like American Sniper, Lone Survivor, Black Hawk Down and We Were Soldiers. There is so much you never knew about the war in Afghanistan that this book brings to life you'll get pissed you never saw it in the mass media. But at the same time you will have a even greater respect for our Special Forces than you already have if you are even thinking about this book. Just buy it and read it.

Another great book to help understand what War is

Excellent read! Since the not all in the world live/die by the same rules of morality (including us on rare and embarrassing occasions) and having read many books on the courage/sacrifices that our (and other countries) men/women make when tasked with war on others I have wondered what our western societies would be like if these small few did not go when asked. What kind of world would we live in if terrorism won or IS ruled? Do I wish we lived in a world where the talent and potential of our youth (small in numbers but incredible in what they accomplish) were not tasked with the waging of war on others? Yes but I also know our world does not work that way and likely will not for as long as life is perceived as expendable in exchange for power. I believe if more people knew the horror and sacrifice that comes when we send people to defend our way of life we would support them better in so many ways. Be it training, equipment, ROE, prosecution of the war with achievable goals, and care during and after for those who sacrificed in part or whole. This book, among so many others, tells what a really small number of our people experience when in a war, thankfully. When I read these stories and reflect on all I have to be grateful it reminds me that my world could be totally different were it not for someone being on the tip of the spear to defend what so many of us take for granted. Long rambling review, my apologies. Bottom line; THANK YOU to those who give so that I can type out reviews/opinions while I sit in a warm house watching college football bowl games and not worry about a car bomb up the street, or someone knocking on the door and dragging me away, or any of the other myriad things which sadly and regularly occur in many countries throughout the world.

About the Author

Terrific formulation(s) for pan pizza dough that will bake correctly in any home oven. No stones or baking steel required. He states that the dough works well in cheap pans. I baked mine in a PSTK coated pan by Lloyd Pans with very good results. The recommended temperature is 475 degrees and the bake time is about 25 minutes. This is the polar opposite of most other types of pizza which generally benefit from ovens capable of high temperatures and short bake times.

The recipes are given by weights (!!!), which is a MUST if you want to have any chance of duplicating your success the next time or make adjustments the next time to improve it.

The basic bread flour dough translates into baker's percents as follows: Flour (100%), Water (70%), IDY (.7%), Salt (2%), Oil (4%). Thickness Factor=.103. I post this because if you need to scale the recipe to a particular size pan or if you just want to make dough for a single pizza, these figures makes it easy. There are terrific scaling tools available at pizza making dot com that where you can plug in these numbers and enter any size rectangular or round pan and you'll be given the ingredient amounts in grams and/or ounces.

He also has other formulations that use Buratto, light spelt and whole spelt flours. You're not going to find these at your local big-box store, but I appreciate the fact that he's sharing his real formulation instead of a dumbed-down recipe.

He discusses making your our sourdough starter. Unlike "legit" Neapolitan dough which is generally fermented at around 65 degrees (which means you need a wine fridge set at that temp or something similar), his sourdough formula can be refrigerated overnight in a standard fridge.

Long awaited

Every foodie in the English speaking world has been waiting for this edition.

We made the Broccolini & Mortadella pizza last night and it was wonderful. A couple of notes are in order however. As indicated in the books "A Note From The Translator" the amount of water indicated in the dough recipes is somewhat low. Bonci uses extremely fresh flour but if you're making these recipes with regular bread flour from the supermarket you'll need more like 800 grams of water to a kilogram of flour. As mentioned in the previous review, the size of the dough balls is a little unrealistic. We find a 600 gram dough ball will perfectly fill a 1/4 sheet pan (10.5 x 15.5 inches: Norpro Stainless Steel 10 X 15 X 1 inch Jelly Roll Baking Pan)

If you like Roman style pizza al taglio this is the book for you.

Awesome pizza recipes

We first heard of Gabriele Bonci and the Pizzarium by watching the Rome episode of Anthony Bourdain's show, The Layover. When we were in Rome visiting the Vatican this past May, we took a side trip to the Pizzarium for lunch, and we were seriously not disappointed. The pizza was fantastic (best we had in Rome), and the choices were incredible. I saw he was coming out with a book, and I pre-ordered it here on Amazon. We made two of his pizzas last night - one with potato, eggplant, and fresh mozzarella, and the other with butternut squash, provolone, and pancetta, and they came out insanely delicious. No joke. The only issue I had with the book was where it says Bonci's dough recipe yields enough dough for six pizzas, and that's just not true. If you want the dough to be fluffy and large enough to fit in the pan, like it shows in the book, then you'll get two pizzas out of each dough. Other than that, awesome book and a cool souvenir, especially if you've been there.

Forget the inflated claims that follow from ``predict in the subtitle; this is a leading jury consultant's often valuable guide on how to understand people from the host of nonverbal signs they present. With the help of lawyer Mazzarella, Dimitrius, who for more than 14 years has helped legal teams pick juries in such trials as that of O.J. Simpson and the McMartin Preschool case, tells readers ``what to look and listen for, having the curiosity and patience to garner the necessary information, and understanding how to recognize the patterns of a person's appearance, body language, voice and conduct.'' The key word here is ``patterns''; Dimitrius isnt interested in ``Eureka!'' revelations coming from a single sign or behavioral mode. Rather, she demonstrates how one can learn a great deal about people from a combination of their facial expressions and body language, grooming and dress, home and workplace ``props'' (e.g. what kind of photos or art they have in their offices, and in what kind of frames), among other indications of their character. And she insists on a due regard for intuition and context. Concerning the latter, in a ``sometimes a cigar is just a cigar'' approach, she wisely advises readers not to overinterpret, recalling a Rodney King trial juror who impelled Dimitrius into speculative overdrive by wearing black gloves into court each day. ``Was she making a racial statement? Were the gloves a political commentary? Did they have some other unknown significance?'' Finally asked by Dimitrius about the gloves after the trial ended, the juror responded, ``It was so cold inside that courtroom!'' While quite comprehensive, Dimitrius does scant a few nonverbal forms of communication, such as posture, and is occasionally guilty of simplistic writing and bad grammar. But these flaws are overwhelmed the amount of practical good advice for discerningly ``reading'' others and becoming more aware of the myriad nonverbal messages one conveys. Worthwhile reading in conjunction with other books, but insufficient by itself.

Some good thoughts in this book but nowhere near the information you really need to begin to really assess people. It's worthwhile reading in parts, but doesn't quiet give you the tools you need to effectively read people. The most important thing it does teach you is to defer decision making. Most people think of reading people as being able to immediately assess someone, and the author does a great job of describing this habit as jumping to a conclusion and clearly sets out a premise for deferring judgment until you've gathered enough evidence on which to base a decision before jumping to any conclusions. That was a powerful takeaway...but then it didn't really give many insights as to psychological features. Overall, worthwhile reading in combination with other books but not sufficient in and of itself to give you any real competitive advantage. If you're looking to read people in order to avoid toxic individuals, I would recommend "The Sociopath Next Door" by Martha Stout. If you're looking for a book on personality assessment, I would recommend the book "Making Sense of People" by Samuel Barondes.

A catalog of banal generalities, poorly written with no illustrations

Most people would agree that "reading people" is a visual skill. Why then, are there no (and I mean zero) pictures in this book? Remarkably, that is only the second worst aspect of this book. The worst thing is that it supplies no (and once again, I mean zero) useful information. Oh sure, it has list on practically every page of observable behavior (clothing/physical attributes/etc.). But each behavior could mean up to a dozen different things, and no system or guidance is provided for reaching a conclusion. I am no expert on non-verbal communication, but I suspect this is the authors way of expressing the concept that if we want actual information, we should hire her as a consultant.

To save you some time and money, here is the entire book summed up in two sentances: "If you concentrate on observing people, you will begin to notice many aspects of their appearance. If you apply yourself for many years to this endeavor, you will come to understand what you are looking at."

I gave up on this book at page 70. Could be there are valuable tidbits buried in the back of the book. If so, I take back everything I said, except the part about the book being poorly written.

Very Insightful Yet Practical Information!

My husband and I are in the process of hiring employees for a new business we plan to open soon. I bought this book to help me develop a thought process I could use to interview prospective employees. My goal is to hire honest, positive, caring, compassionate people who have a strong sense of responsibility and accountability. I found the first half of this book to be incredibly insightful, offering invaluable information I will definitely incorporate into my interview process. So - totally worth reading. The second half of the book was less helpful for my purposes - but still good information. Jo-Ellen Dimitrius is the "real deal"! I would love to sit down with her and a glass of wine and pick her remarkable brain!
