My 7 year old granddaughter really liked this story and so close to Christmas.
The book is probably written for a younger child, but she enjoyed it nonetheless.

Where did we go wrong? Partly it is the American system. Bigger, better, faster. Out with the old. In with the new. Mankind ever marching forward, with new ’gee whiz’ technology. Advanced technology is quite successful in the world of iron, electronics, concrete, manufacturing, which are systems manipulating inorganic materials.

We have a unique position in that our livelihood depends on working with living matter that does not bend to the will of mans’ desires. Every living thing, whether plant or animal, has its own course, laid down in genetics developed over thousands of years of natural selection. The natural world cannot be bulldozed into doing what we want.
Our main effort should be to simplify livestock operations with nature as the guide. The first thing we must do is carefully study nature, especially the symbiosis between plants and animals to bring back the original fertility of our soils. Without a deep understanding of these systems, and how they work, we are stumbling in the dark.WARNING: It looks like you have unsaved changes that could be lost. The Time Is Definitely Here!

Chip Hines did a great job writing an entertaining book that explains why the cattle industry is broke and what can be done to fix it. I read this book first and then "How To Not Go Broke Ranching" by Walt Davis. Having been on the Kit Pharo bandwagon for a number of years now, I was not surprised by Chip Hines' views. I agree with the views, but I had to read the book to get a better idea of how to put the plans into action. This is a really good book and I recommend it. As a companion to it, I suggest "How To Not Go Broke Ranching" by Walt Davis, which to me was actually more comprehensive. Not quite as entertaining, but provided better management ideas and specific steps for operation (Walt does "planned grazing" instead of just "rotational grazing"). Now I'm going to get Savory's Holistic Resource Management--it was recommended by both authors.

This book challenges modern day logic and gives you the advice you need to move ahead to a sustainable, profitable operation. About the Author
A veteran of more than 25 vintages in the wine business, J. Patrick Henderson is currently Senior Winemaker at Kenwood Vineyards in California¿s Sonoma Valley. In addition to his work at Kenwood, he is also an instructor at Santa Rosa Junior College where he has taught hundreds of students the fine points of wine and the craft of winemaking since 1991. A graduate of the Viticulture and Enology program at the University of California at Davis, Mr. Henderson is also a member of The American Society for Enology and Viticulture as well as the Society of Wine Educators.

Dellie Rex has been in the wine business for over twenty five years. She worked independently as President of Rex Associates, a regional marketing company for wineries and importers of fine wine. For 12 years she was Adjunct Professor of Wine Appreciation at Boston University's School of Hospitality Administration, and four years she headed up the beverage program at New England Culinary Institute. Ms. Rex is now an independent Wine Consultant, working with three clients to advise on the marketing of their wines or wine-related services. She is a member of the Society of Wine Educators and of La Commanderie de Bordeaux, an honorary society for wine connoisseurs. Ms. Rex serves on the Board of the Elizabeth Bishop Wine Resource Center in Boston. In 1999, Boston Magazine listed Dellie Rex as One of the Fifty Most Intriguing Women in New England, dubbing her "the wine expert's wine expert."

John F. Oates is Professor of Anthropology at Hunter College and The Graduate School, CUNY. His most recent books include African Primates: Status Survey and Conservation Action Plan (1996) and Colobine Monkeys: Their Ecology, Behaviour, and Evolution (with A. G. Davies, 1994).

If you read any book about tropical conservation, read this one!

This is quite simply the most honest and genuine look at the potentials and failures of modern attempts at conservation in tropical countries I have seen. Oates consciously pits his own experience and analysis against the more politically fashionable approach of "BINGOS" -- Big International NGO's, such as the World Wildlife Fund and many other major environmental organizations. Their story is that so-called "integrated conservation and development" is a win-win situation -- with poverty alleviation, people will naturally reduce pressure on the natural environment and wildlife. The reality, unfortunately, is that is this not what actually happens -- it did not happen in the West where most conservation scientists were educated, and it is not happening in tropical Africa or elsewhere in the tropics. In fact, in many cases we have quite the opposite situation: the more people have, the more they want, and the more they exploit resources -- forest, wildlife, anything -- to get it.

Oates describes a nightmare world where well-paid consultants and foreign pressures actually contribute to increasing pressure on collapsing forests and wildlife in West Africa, and where immigrants invade and destroy forests that until recently had been largely devoid of any people. I have seen this world for myself, both in some of the same places Oates describes and elsewhere in the tropics. Oates' description is as astoundingly eloquent and exhaustive as it is emotionally restrained. The tragic truth he describes applies not only to West Africa but many other places, where "paper parks" are unprotected from poachers and forest destroyers due to corrupt and crippled policies and plain old-fashioned greed. But Oates is not an advocate of despair; he also offers thoughtful, practical suggestions as alternatives for these failed policies based on his experience -- something we should work towards.

Oates is one of a minority of people who actually cares about the fates of West Africa's amazing forests and their wildlife. Most consultants, as he notes in the book, hardly visit these fast disappaearing forests. And no wonder: to see this mass destruction with your own eyes is almost unbearable. As Oates points out, the destroyers are not indigenous people but opportunistic immigrants who will move on once they have exhausted the land or their prey. Those who would cast him, as one reviewer below, as somehow "imperialist" are sadly mistaken. I would say it takes one to know one. Oates has been passionately engaged in collarboration with African colleagues in trying to save wildlife in Africa for decades. He is widely admired in Africa, as he says what is true but what others lack experience to know or the courage to say; precisely these problems frustrate many African conservationists as well. If there were more people with his intelligence, integrity, and courage -- to say what is not politically correct, but true, that the widely adopted strategies of governments and BINGOs are failing nature and wildlife -- this world would be a far better place.

This book is essential reading for anyone who truly cares about tropical forests, wildlife, and their fates in the modern world. Thank you, John Oates, for writing it!

Myth and Reality in Oates' Misanthropic Prescription

This book refashions the unethical argument that in order to "save the rain forests" we need to relocate the people who live in them. Oates, a primatologist, focuses on the preservation of endangered species, essentially arguing that "we should" swap their survival for the lives of ordinary African farmers. Having worked in many of the places he is discussing, I find his argument to be appalling. Furthermore, he argues that "sustainable development programs" are foolhardy, politically-correct song and dance shows that accomplish nothing but a feeling of well-wishes.

What I want to know is what Oates has in mind as a solution to issues of poor governance, corruption, and enforcement. He suggests that we essentially ask African governments to set the land aside for conservation, but doesn't address other fundamental problems like poor governance, famine, and climate change. Furthermore, he doesn't address the problem of corruption in national parks - what is to stop a guard from taking a bribe from a hunter? It happens all the time in West Africa, where many of these preserves have already failed. Thirdly, to what extent should these regulations be enforced. Shoot the poor hunter who wants to put food on the table?

It is obvious that in order to "save the rain forests" we need to reverse the tides of neo-colonialism and look at Africa as something more than just a resource to exploit or worse - an exotic fantasy to keep alive.

A very important conservation book

If you are at all interested in conservation, then you have to read this book. John Oates shows how the modern concept of community based conservation that looks so good on paper, in reality has been a dismal failure in West Africa. He provieds several examples from his 30 year long career in West Africa. He shows that you have to be realistic when designing conservation programs, and that many people making conservation decisions are more interested in prestige and money than they are in preserving natural ecosystems. It is sad when you read that the World Wildlife Fund conservation planners are not interested to even go see the areas that they are supposed to protect. The intrinsic value of nature is a hard sell, but finally the utilitarian view of nature seems to always lead to exploitation, and increased pressure on the areas that are supposed to be protected. He also very clearly demonstrates that the idea of using zoos for conservation is a bad one. Zoos are probabally the best way to educate the public about conservation, but are very poor ways to protect species, in fact zoos can even do more harm that good. This book really open your eyes, the situation isn't hopeless, but if conservation projects in Africa are going to work, then it has to be done with a realistic approach and the intrinsic value of nature needs to be on the fore front of the effort.

A good introduction to high perf ignitions but not up to date......

I bought this book looking for specifics on setting up a computer programmable ignition for my drag car. There was very little information on timing settings and timing curves for small tire cars with lots of power.

The book does provide general information on various ignition systems. It is good for the novice and a good refresher for the veteran racer.

It is 6 years old and could use an update.

About the Author

Dr. Clarence W. de Silva is a professor of mechanical engineering at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. He earned his PhDs from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1978) and the University of Cambridge, England (1998), and an honorary DEng from the University of Waterloo (2008). He has published and edited numerous books, chapters, journal articles, and conference papers. His recent books include Mechanics of Materials (Taylor & Francis/CRC, 2014), Mechatronics―A Foundation Course (Taylor & Francis/CRC, 2010); Modeling and Control of Engineering Systems (Taylor & Francis/CRC, 2009); and Sensors and Actuators: Control System Instrumentation (Taylor & Francis/CRC, 2007).

Too many formula errors!

This book was a required text for an instrumentation class. My proffesor's endorsement actually graces the back of the book, which makes me question his competency.

The reason for two stars is the amount of errors. There are so many errors, that I distrust any formula. The only positive out of this book is that I've become quite good at analyzing the circuits to confirm the validity of his formulas.

I regretfully purchased this book from my University's book store which has a two week return period, so now I'll be lucky to receive $50 at book buy-back time.

Save your money.
