Self-censoring of speech

Why is it taboo to talk about menstruation, yet a little more acceptable to refer to "Aunt Flo?" How does something go from being offensive to politically correct (such as race or sexual orientation)? Why are some words offensive by merit of association (i.e. niggardly)?

There are words you shouldn't say in front of children, in mixed company, or to your mother. There are topics best to be avoided. There are terms that get bleeped, politely ignored, and words we tie ourselves into knots to find euphemisms for. These are our forbidden words. They are forbidden because they describe our taboos in frank and blunt ways. We find roundabout ways to describe sex, excrement, eating, menstruation, and death for a reason. The authors of this book explore that reason. They delve into what makes a topic taboo, then into what makes a word taboo.

In general, the authors do not consider censorship--political reasons for considering certain words or topics off-limits or an organized, mandated way of making them so. They are mainly interested in the limits we put on ourselves, on our understanding of social mores that keeps us from spouting off like George Carlin at a business meeting.

While this is a slow and scholarly read, it is unbelievably useful to anyone interested in language and the anthropology of language. Highly recommended.

Interesting book

Very interesting book about history of censorship and its application. Beginning of the book is easy and entertaining to read. However, pretty soon it gets convoluted, scientific and confusing. If you're not serious about this subject, this is not for you. It's hardly a lighthearted beach reading.

Well-designed introductory textbook for motivated students

I took some psychology courses back in my college days, but that was in the early 90s. Since science is always changing, I wanted to brush up on some basics before pursuing graduate studies. This textbook did a good job of refreshing my memory and bringing me more up to date with more current science and research. Not only that, it went into more detail than some other similar textbooks without being overwhelming or hard to follow. I would highly recommend it as an introductory psychology textbook for someone new to the subject, or for someone looking to refresh their memory after a number of years after college before pursuing further studies. I feel more prepared now to tackle some more detailed study in the field.

I thought this text was great--it provides information in a very clear and well-explained manner for the student who has never taken a psychology course before. Gray proves he has a sense of humor as well, injecting funny lines every now and then. It provides a lot of pertinent information in an interesting manner, and covers everything from theories on development and society to cognition and neuroscience. After finishing my intro psych class I even found myself wishing I could still use the text for my other classes (in fact I still refer to it every now and then).

If truth be told, I do not even like psychology, and feel contemt of some sort for it.I took it this semester to fulfill my humanity requirement.Nevertheless, I cannot deny that this book is wonderfully written, and it was a true pleasure reading it ! Peter Gray is obviously very fond of psychology, as well as of teaching it.It was much fun reading a book written so sensitively and with so much enthusiasm. I know many universities assign this book and am therefore surprised only one person reviewed it so far.

This text misses very little, it has full chapters on not only the traditional areas such as negligence and malpractice, documentation, standards of care and patient rights, ethics, & risk management, but also addresses critical areas such as labor law, discrimination in employment, safety, whistleblower protections, and issues for education of students in clinical centers.
The strength of the text is in its down-to-earth applicability combined with a strong academic undercurrent with proper citations and references to case law as well as the literature of legal issues in the professions.

I have used Miller & Dubofsky to teach my undergraduate options class in the past and this year I switched to Hull (7th edition). I find that I much prefer the way Miller & Dubofsky is organized. A good example would be the treatment of forwards and futures. Miller & Dubofsky begin with forwards and move on to futures. In Hull they are treated together and this serves to confuse students, especially when it comes to valuation and marking to market. Another strength of the book is that risk management is addressed right away whereas in Hull it seems to be an afterthought. Hull's notation is also quite confusing for students. Hull tries to do everything using continuously compounded rates but for many instruments (FRAs and Interest Rate Swaps for instance) this is not possible. The result is a mish-mash of compounding conventions in the same formula.

There are a few weaknesses of the Miller & Dubofsky text as well but these tend to be minor. I think it would benefit by a second edition.
