Is there life after big brother?

Despite its title, this book is not really a sequel to George Orwell's 1984 (1984). It is a satirical look at what happens when an authoritarian government collapsesm, based loosely on the Hungarian and Czech uprisings. The story, complied by a future historian living in Hong Kong, brings together primary source material on what happens in the months after the death of Big Brother. The primary source material is largely taken from the principal characters in 1984 (Winston Smith, Julia, O'brien, etc.) complied by an increasing deranged historian.

Of course, from a purist perspective this is impossible. Big brother cannot die and I do not think that the structure of INGSOC can be so easily dismantaled. But this is not the point...the book looks at the conflict in a revolutionary society as different factions vie for power and for their idelogical goals.

Not a great book but an interesting (and short) read.

A satirical sequel of a satire

This book is really meant to follow 1984 as those who are not familiar with the Orwellian classic will not be able to follow the plot enough to enjoy it to it's fullest. I found it sharp, hilarious, and a great read.

Great book must have!

This seems like a warm up book but it is a classic manual on what not to do and explains clearly what is relevant to do to get results that are long lasting. I felt that time was need in work out to address these issue correctly. Great book clear reading instructions going the right way toward results. I saw it advertised for the longest in BlackBelt Mag now I finally got a copy. No loaning this one out get your own.

Excellent Work-out, Awesome Book

This book offers a very effective work-out routine. It requires no weights, but you will still get very good results without them. Heavy weights also tend to be more damaging than beneficial, and they really aren't necessary. This book shows you that, and it provides an awesome alternative work-out routine. It has a basic work-out and then a bunch of supplemental excercises that concentrate on specific areas of the body. I love the fact that a lot of the excercises focus on your joints and areas that can be igonored (like your neck, knees, elbows, etc.). This book is not about beefing up or building a lot of mass, it's about getting strong, flexible, and more nimble. Harry Wong has written a very comprehensive and easy to follow work-out book. With this book there is no need to go to a gym and pay extreme amounts of money to get in shape. You don't even need weights, a few excercises require chairs (like concentrated push-ups, chair dips). It's all about using your own body weight or muscle tension to build up specific areas of your body. It will make you stronger and more toned, as well as more flexible. I am really glad i ordered this book, and doing the exercises has improved my body and mind's health. This is an especially good book for people who are interested in or who practice a martial art. But i would recommend this book to just about anyone, especially for the ....

Worth the read- will give you an invisible "gym" to use anywhere!

I purchased this book during a long, snowy winter that did not allow me to get out of doors for exercise. This is not a book on bodybuilding per se, it's more about general fitness. And YES, it does work.

My recommendation: Regardless of how much fitness equipment you have available to you, this book will give you techniques that will stay with you for life, permitting an instant workout wherever you are, under whatever circumstances. Take some time to memorize the exercises and develop a routine.

The best part is, once you understand the principles behind Wong's well described workouts, you'll be able to invent a few motions of your own. His torso and abdomen exercises were helpful to me in eliminating lower back pain (but consult your physician for your own needs). Great book!

UPDATE: It's 2016 now and over ten years later, I've lost this book. I have no idea where it is, and probably haven't seen it in over 6 years. Yet, I still remember, and use, the exercises. I think that's a testament to it's simple effectiveness. I recently started up those "windmill" style shoulder exercises again to relieve back and shoulder pain associated with mousing all day on the computer, and it's helped quite a bit. Thanks Harry.

More valuable for the translations than the IPA

This review can be applied to the complete catalog of Nico Castel's Opera Libretti. I happen to own most of them and have found them extremely useful as a teacher of voice and as a director of opera. The hard cover linen bindings are Smyth-Sewn, rather than glued, so you can expect a lifetime of use. They are printed on bright white paper which is easy to read. They reek of quality. Now to the content. For me, the word-for-word translations are invaluable. Mr. Castel has also provided idiomatic translations when the literal ones are a bit obtuse. This is very helpful. There are many voice teachers and singers out there that rely on IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) to teach/learn their texts. I must admit that I do not subscribe entirely to IPA as a sole source for pronunciation. Islands are places but are also a state of mind for armchair island-hoppers.

This is one of the better books in the "Earth" series. I've been an island junkie most of my life, an armchair island hopper. This book is good entertainment for an island junkie, but it's not just a jaunt through a selection of islands. The "Culture" part of the title really does mean an examination of the idea of islands, such as the idealization of South Sea islands such as Tahiti and Hawai'i. This part of the book is really an examination of islands as a state of mind.

Royle's writing is rather good, and the photos (and other illustrations) are good enough to set a reader's mind to drifting off, thinking about blue seas dotted with atolls. Among the aspects looked at in the book are depictions of islands in visual art as well as in literature (remember Herman Melville?). There is an appendix listing 100 islands by size and population. There's a lot of fascinating detail about some places, such as St. Helena and Ascension (two of my favorites).

Silicon Docks gives a look at the raise of the Dublin tech scene over the years, as seen by multiple Irish journalists and focused in large parts on a specific Dublin district known by some as the "Silicon Docks". While the history of the transformation of this area is quite interesting, and some of the success stories of the country are also of interest, the book sometimes feels disjointed, alternating chapters focused on story with large lists of companies establishing offices, complete with number of employees and money invested, which gets old quite fast.

Beyond this, the book also lacks neutrality, overlooking many of the problems and failures of many companies to focus on the successes over and over again, thus giving just a fragment of the story.

In the end, if you can get past the bias and are interested in economical and urban development of Ireland, have a look at it, you wouldn't regret it.

While I have basic soil textbooks such as the classic by Brady and Weil (The Nature & Properties of Soils), this book covers the basics very clearly and has excellent visuals! Further, it deals with the specifics of growing plants/trees especially in urban soils. The review questions at the end of each chapter not only help to focus attention on the main points, but are also an excellent guide for any professional-in-training who will be taking a certifiication exam such as the Certified Arborist Exam or Certified Horticulturist. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in learning about the basics of growing plants in productive garden soils and in learning how to care for the soil-web-of-life!

Clean eats but so time-consuming!

Let me start by saying I respect Brendan Brazier. I have followed him and his progresses and discoveries on clean vegan nutrition for years. I am a firm believer that we need to clean up our diets and that natural sourced foods are the way to go for a better health, disease prevention, and for... thriving!
However, as good as his recipes look or sound like, they also are time-, energy-, and money-consuming. The ingredients for the recipes are often exotic and hard to find at your local grocery store (even at a co-op or natural store). You will have to go through three markets (including probably an Asian one) to find all for the coconut lime lemongrass soup as tempting as it is! Also for the spice mixes, you will have to find powdered reiki, or echinea and astralagus.
At last, his desserts and drinks recipes sound oh! so yummy, but come on! ...I need a high speed blender, slow-speed juice extractor, and high-speed juicer! I can't even start to think about making a green juice following his mighty king chlorophyll juice!
To sum up, I would say it's a great book with amazing, tasty, healthy recipes for people who have a lot of time and quite some money on hand and live in big cities where health stores flourish.

I really wanted to love this book. I am still not completely vegan but I don't eat dairy or land animals at all and have been transitioning for the last few months to a whole foods diet and thought this book could be a good fit.

He means transitioning if you are still used to eating burgers and want fake meat and cheese! There are so many burger recipes in this that use the same aioli and the same sprouted buns over and over again. Plus wraps. I think he just made the sauces so complicated to justify a wrap recipe. One burger recipe consists of 5 different recipes. Same goes for desserts. Incredibly long ingredient lists--one cheesecake recipe says prep time is only 20 minutes. It took me 20 minutes just to read the recipe!

I love to cook and probably spend 2 hours a day cooking and some of these recipes are so ridiculously complicated in their ingredients, preparation, and time that I don't even want to tackle them. Also, I was surprisingly turned off by all the photos of him running and bicycling. He comes across as a total ego-maniac. (It's as bad as the mommy bloggers that get cookbook deals and then put a zillion photos of their children in their cookbooks.)

In short:
If you want an adventure and have a high-speed blender, this is the book for you.

If you have a busy life and not a lot of time or have apprehension in the kitchen, probably not a good book for you.

Buy his earlier books instead!

I love Brendan's earlier books such as Thrive: The Vegan Nutrition Guide to Optimal Performance. That book has great information and useful recipes. He went Hollywood in this book. Most of these recipes call for his 'products' as an ingredient. It's more gloss than it is substance.
