The writer worked as an orderly and virtual jack of all trades - a bit of Huckleberry Finn from Long Island City, so to speak -
for English doctors and nurses posted with the Serbian Second Army as it withdrew under unbelievably harsh conditions and at a tremendous human cost in the face of the overwhelming German onslaught.
