Time and emptiness as design and political strategy to counter over-development

“It is a story of a young man who fled to America in 1989 in search of new possibilities in response to his living society but failed, then fled back to Taiwan and settled in Yilan. Inspired by its unique climate condition, geography, mythology, history and rebellious spirits of this place, he has slowly realized that Taiwan’s democratic nature (particularly in Yilan) has always been very much alive, that as long as the young generation is free from the restraints of specialization, they could start from every possible corner and freely search for, or even create their own client or clients, select resources wisely and work collaboratively to create a spirited working atmosphere more engaging with the place.”
The first part of Mr. Huang’s CV reads similarly to many of his contemporaries from Taiwan. He attended Tunghai University, the top design school in Taiwan before going to America to study at Yale University. Upon graduating, he went onto work for his design mentor Eric Owen Moss and taught at North Carolina State University.
A variation of this path was taken by many of his generation, and those before him. Attend Tunghai, go to grad school in America, ideally an Ivy League univesity, work for a prominent architect, teach before returning to Taipei to establish a practice.
For Huang however, the similarity ends here. After returning to Taiwan in 1994, instead of starting his office in Taipei, the city where he was borned. Huang decided to assemble his practice in the rural county of Yilan, a small township with population of about half-million on the east coast of Taiwan. It is a region that historically resisted the temptation of industrialization, instead have opted to maintain its agricultural enterprise. It is from this context that Huang’s practice emerge, by working with the particularities of the place and engaging with its people, rather than working from the abstract and the theoretical.
The Japanese architectural critic Onoda Yasuaki describe Mr. Huang’s process with the following: “His style, which is to work in a locality and strive to find the connection between the environment, architecture and people, is the antithesis of the contemporary success story, a counterexample to all those who, in their eagerness to become star architects, rush to big cities and sell themselves to the media.”
Living in Place, presents three areas of intervention which address Fieldoffice’s preoccupations to-date: First, participatory design through community engagement; Second, power of emptiness, a design strategy which allows public flows and activities to occur; and Third, beyond the city of Yilan, works from mountaintops and seashores which best exemplify the idea of “Living in Place”.
