Felix Frank
Felix Frank has used and programmed computers for most of his life. During and after working on his computer science diploma, he gained experience on the job as a systems administrator, server operator, and open source software developer. He spent 6 years of his 11-year career as a Puppet power user. In parallel, he spent about two years intensifying his studies through ongoing source code contributions and active participation in several conferences.
Martin Alfke
Martin Alfke is co-founder and CEO of example42 GmbH. He is a Puppet and automation enthusiast since 2007. In the past, he would have said he is a "system administrator". Nowadays, he likes the term "infrastructure engineer". The big difference is that system administrators sshs into systems to fix them, whereas infrastructure engineers fix their automation. Martin is serving as a Puppet Labs' training partner in Germany since 2011, conducting official Puppet training. In his spare time, he likes reading books and visiting interesting locations.

Look for a different book.

I purchased this book hoping to learn more about Puppet. After 4 chapters, I would not recommend this book as it gets down into the weeds very quickly and loses sight of educating in favor of dumping way too much information way too quickly. Chapter 1 drops you into writing and running a manifest with no instructions on the location of where manifests go. There are statements that indicate "you should now know" something, but they didn't explain it previously. Chapter 2 gets into a heavy discussion on Certificate Authorities and then jumps right into why the package names are misleading and confusing. Then it starts talking about master manifests, but where did you install the master? You're then in installing the puppet agent (not really, you're already configuring it) and here's the problems you'll run into. Then it's back to complex Puppet server (not master) configurations you can set up, but likely won't want to do. After that, we jump back to certificates and other things you need may to do on the agent and server. Chapter 3 is a giant bunch of words that are specific to Puppet, with little context or explanation. Throughout the first 3 chapters, you'll see lots of code examples in Puppet DSL, which only marginally make sense. Before you can even wrap your head around what they're doing, they bring up arrays and hash values. Chapter 4 starts out with "at this point you have already performed some production-grade tasks with Puppet." Really? With the 4 and 5 star reviews this book has, I believed it was going to be a valuable asset to my library. I honestly wish I hadn't purchased the Kindle version of this book - because I can't return it.

Essential or Deep?

This is the second edition, but it's not clear how the first edition (that I've not read) it's necessary.
You will start from writing your first manifest, without any background knowledge of what is Puppet and it's architecture. Maybe was already covered in the previous edition, but in my opinion a short introduction was useful.
Compared to other "essential" books this required some initial knowledge, otherwise it's too difficult to learn. Definitely not for beginners.
Anyway the examples are clear enough and chapter by chapter you learn more and more.
New features of Puppet 4 are covered in chapter 6.
A good reference, maybe without a clear path on how use Puppet, but deep enough.

I will most definitely recommend this book

Puppet 4 Essentials, Second Edition gets you started rapidly. The book also highlights the changes associated with performance improvements as well as the new language features in Puppet 4. The Puppet Agent that comes with an all-in-one (AIO) package and can run on multiple systems was a clincher for me. I will most definitely recommend this book.
